Gus Malzahn blasts Nawrocki (PFW)'s account of Newton

Pretty similar to my take, despite how it gets characterized.

If you're not 100% on board with him, you get proclaimed as hater, racist or whatever

No, you get proclaimed a hater when you continually diminish his accomplishments by comparing him to JaMarcus Russell and David Carr. I'm sorry but if you personally failed as a professional athlete or you didn't win any sort of college championship then shut the hell up. You can't take away from someone's accomplishments if you didn't even do anything successful yourself. The fact that so many people are arguing over Newton should convey in it's own right that he is a talent and indeed a one of a kind athlete. However, when someone uses personal threats and attacks a guy he hasn't even met through second hand information that may or may not be eschued is flat out shallow and disrespectful. You don't have to be 100% on board with him but you also don't have to make him look like the anti-christ I mean seriously he is getting as much hate as Michael Vick received. I haven't seen any negative comments about the other guys in the draft. Yes, I have seen critiques, but I am pretty sure Patrick Peterson, Marcell Dareus, and A.J. Green have not been called fake. I mean hell, Patrick Peterson was lifted up and darn near proclaimed a god after it was indicated a "pay for play" deal might have been in place at LSU. However, God forbid Cam Newton to do something like this and people are calling to crucify him. Everyone always wants to bash Cam Newton because apparently he is a proud son of a b*tch, but if I am not mistaken he plays the game exactly like the Carolina Panthers own Steve Smith; with a fire and passion that is untouchable. If you really want to argue for or against something about Newton at least make sure it is factual or at least somewhat true like... "he has trouble with his footwork at times." I mean really? no really? really? whatever.

You ARE NOT ok with us taking Newton. You've said in probably hundreds of posts "We don't need to take any QBs in this draft" (which I personally think is a mask for saying you don't want Newton). You've talked about how Gabbert would be ok PROVIDED xyz happens.

pretty big difference between being okay with a guy ending up drafted at #1 and wanting to draft a particular guy at #1

one implies that if it happens, you would be fine with it and the support the guy. the other is that you want that guy in particular.

I'd be okay with Newton. Would prefer others, but hey, the guys making these decisions know far more than me so I'd get right behind him and root for him the second he was a Panther.

Does that mean I want to draft him #1 if I was in charge of the decision, based on what I have available to me now? No.

Thanks for illustrating my point, guys

FYI: The whole "if we don't draft a quarterback this year, we'll never be good" argument is stupid.

By the same token, the "if we sign Billy Volek, we will be fine" argument is even stupider.

I am pretty sure that is false. We had two times the talent St. Louis did, yet they added Sam Bradford and were one win away from making the playoff's. Try again........................................

No one has suggested Volek as a franchise QB, only as a stopgap.

And yes, I can live with a stopgap this year, if that's the best option.

To Mr. Scot, not sucking ass is going 8-8 and missing the playoffs for a few years.

See his reply above.... LOL

That doesn't promise us Andrew Luck, you realize that right?

Never said it did.

But do I think it gives us better options in the draft than are available this year? Yes I do.

But if we draft Newton, were in the playoffs this season and every season after, right?

Some of you guys should look back at 2002 and 2003.

Ahh... yes... now we get to deal in absolutes.

NOTHING is guaranteed by drafting ANY player, even your precious Andrew Luck.

HOWEVER, drafting Newton has a GREATER POSSIBILITY of making playoffs in 2 years or less than bringing a "stop gap" Volek or some other bench warming tool.

The only QB better than Newton in next years class would be Luck and possibly Weeden.
