Safety Martin also known for missed tackles, and faces contenders at his position

Carolina Panthers free safety Sherrod Martin lost his dreadlocks this offseason in his first haircut since high school eight years ago.

“Probably only people from my hometown have seen me with a low cut,” said Martin, who is from Griffin, Ga. “Some guys were shocked I did it. I got a few compliments. I ain’t never been a bad-looking guy, so …”

Martin looked bad a few times last season when he missed crucial tackles as the Panthers’ last line of defense. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Martin’s whiffs were obvious to fans because they occurred in the open field.

He played like crap but it's a new year. He has absolutely no room for error though. If he doesn't look like a changed man then he should be on the bench. The new secondary coach will help. We'll know early if Martin will start for 2012.

...and him cutting his hair has what to do with his play at safety? LOL

And Charles Godfrey still flies under the radar with his craptastic play

Adds a lot of quickness. Much more aerodynamic.

This is going to be an interesting competition battle because I think that stat wise, these guys are fairly comprable.

Comb Tot Ast Sck PDef Int TDs Yrds FF

Martin 68 50 18 0 11 3 0 16 0

Goldshon 65 55 12 0 15 6 0 53 1 (49'ers Starter: more Int's + yrds)

Ed Reed 52 44 8 1 8 3 0 25 1

Nakamura 5 12 10 2 2 0 0 0 0 (15 gms, no starts)

But these are just stats, I've seen Martin on the field and he whiffs on key plays. We'll see....

If you have ever watched Godfrey play you would know its not craptastic. He has trouble covering NOs TEs but many have. Dude had some great coverage last year and does not miss many tackles. Prob why no one is saying he sucks besides you.
