Well 1968 was well before I took my first breath on this earth, so I won't say what the campaign was all about. But judging by the election map, Nixon seemed to run a "nationwide" strategy. He won practically everything except the northeast and the gulf coast.

The point of the Southern Strategy wasn't to ignore the rest of the country. The point was to come up with a strategy to convince a traditionally Democratic region (The South) to vote Republican.

Let's just say if I was on a message board of Holocaust deniers, I'd mostly bring that up.

As you were...

There was also a time in the first half of the last century when African Americans were considered part of the GOP voter base (when Dems weren't trying to prevent them from voting or hanging them). Seems like a 180 degree difference from today's situation, doesn't it?

The "Southern Strategy" turned out to be extremely successful, many of the social values of rural Dems circa 1960 have since been adopted by the more conservative members of the GOP.

Where are all the GOP moderates that used to believed in compromise, science and climate change just a decade ago?

Despite all the rhetoric throughout the years the GOP's core ideals of looking out for big business and tax breaks for the rich have remained relatively unchanged.

The GOP is now on the verge of reinventing itself yet again after losing the popular vote in five of the last six Presidential elections.

Which pawns will find themselves on the outside looking in after the GOP is finished performing yet another Chameleon like reinvention of itself?
