He sucked at both so they'd rather say "unknown" to imply there's a chance he's better now than "terrible track record," which is more accurate. How is Shula unknown when he was an Offensivr Coord for Tampa in the 90s and a Head Coach for Alabama in the 2000s ? Just sayin
Rivera on his job

It's not the unknown people are wary about, but rather what is known.
During his tenure, TB's offense was at its best in '98 with an 18th ranked scoring offense. 30th in '96, 23rd in '97, and 27th in '99. When he left, it became a top 10 offense.
Alabama wasn't much of anything when he coached there.
The only success he's had was being a QB coach. He did well with Garrad in Jax a few years ago and he's done decently with Cam...although, even that can be up for discussion.
However, he's never had the talent as a O coordinator like he would here. He fits the system and would likely keep the status quo which should help with the stability factor.
I wouldn't be against his picking. But Rivera needs to keep his options open right now.

lol the guy had 3 losing seasons out of 4 at Alabama, and never had an offense ranked higher than 22 as an OC. And he's going to help us win a Super Bowl.I want someone who is gonna be here a while, this is getting ridiculous Cam keeps jump starting careers and getting people jobs........LOL. I want someone who is gonna be committed to helping the panthers win a Superbowl. Then they can leave. That might be Shula.

Im more concerned about keepin the current offense, i like it, i just didnt like Chuds decision making. Dont want Cam and everyone else learning a whole new system again. Now if Shula had a completely new system then i would say hell no.

Panthro's postings have significantly gone down hill as of recent.
He's turned cynical

Shula has never run anything like Chud's offense before and there's nothing to indicate he'd be able to. He's not a coryell guy.Im more concerned about keepin the current offense, i like it, i just didnt like Chuds decision making. Dont want Cam and everyone else learning a whole new system again. "Hey Mr Richardson....no backsies."
There is no continuity on this team. There is no momentum going into next year.
It irritates me to no end that Jerry "Al Davis" RIchardson made the call on Rivera before the GM was hired. Cheap Ass
Shula is an unknown.
Rivera has a built in excuse for 2013 already.
Bring in Gruden.
Not a real fan of Shila, but to call a coach who has been both an NFL offensive coordinator and major college HC as "unknown" is a joke

We'll get to that in a few weeks, now is the time for blankly staring at things.Wow. I thought this would be a thread on Rivera going out and interviewing candidates for his open positions and stuff.

lol. hell let's hire Denny Green, since it's unknown if he's improved after the 12 times he's been fired before.Shula is an unknown as he could have improved quite a bit since he was fired from being the OC in tampa and the HC at Alabama

Yes, it seems like we've been screwed once again. Hard to believe that this wasn't foreseen. Who wants a more-than-likely temporary OC position other than someone who is inexperienced or who had their chance before and blew it and wants another one.
No top notch guys are gonna want to come here.
an offensive coordinator who wants to interview as next HC...
Shula has never run anything like Chud's offense before and there's nothing to indicate he'd be able to. He's not a coryell guy.
how is he not a coryell guy, yet he's the one teaching Cam to run a coryell offense?
