For the record, I still have a working Commodore 64 setup...  First PC I ever bought...

Hell, it's probably time for me to upgrade?

If any of you nerds want to see where IT is headed, check out the link below. Cisco UCS platform is nuts. You can take a chasis that holds 6 - 8 blade servers, with each blade having 60 CPU cores and 1TB of RAM, on a 80gigabit backplane. The amount of poo you can put on one of these is insane as is the amount of I/O it can handle. We have taken our customers entire datacenters and collapsed it down to two of these chasis for redundancy and have tons of room for growth. One chasis alone can easily run 200-300 virtual machines depening on RAM requirements.

Holy fugging pooh!

That's what I was thinking.

My buddy (that same boss from my earlier post) has a working Packard Bell 486 SX at his house...  and that's at least what, 7-8 years newer than a Commodore?

Ah the days of 9600 baud... And now I have 30mb connection.. I'd go to 50mb, but I don't want all the BS TWC throws at you to go along with it

Not only does it still work, I actually have several hundred (maybe 400-500) disks worth of games for the thing...  My biggest problem is being able to find a joystick that works with it...

The funny thing is, half the guys on here have no clue what we're talking about.

I remember when we got really excited that the processors broke 100MHz.

I also distinctly remember having a conversation with my old boss in which the words

"16MB of RAM!!!  We'll never need more than that..."  were spoken.

On our current refresh, we just ordered 6 servers with 1TB of RAM each.  I'm in sciency nerd heaven.

Holy schit!

That's nutz.

I just upgraded my main workstation to 32GB and thought I was badass.

When will the singularity occur and the computers can just upgrade themselves?

My first Navy rating was Data Systems Technician. This is what we learned programming and troubleshooting on (1974): The Sperry Rand UNIVAC 1218:

I just did an RFP a few weeks ago for an international firm that is moving to the Cisco UCS platform. We have 10 chasis coming with 6TB of RAM and 360 cpu cores each for a total of 60TB of RAM and 3,600 cpu Cores.. along with 900TB of storage on Netapp FCoE filers. Insane things you can do these days.
