Panthers roster turnover

13 posts in this topic

The Panthers only have 15 players left over from the 2011 season. Rivera and Gettleman have finally purged themselves of most of Marty Hurney's guys.

Not all of them just yet.

A lot though.  Admittedly more than I realized.

Just ahead of DeAngelo Williams.

There's more than 15 Hurney guys left.

Not going to name them all but the 15 leftover from 11 plus the 5 draft picks left from 2012 and the players acquired in f.a or trade in 12 such as

Dwan Edwards, Nate Chandler, Colin Jones and James Dockery.

it happens each year believe it or not, almost 50% per. you have draft picks, udfas, and FAs(coming and going) each year. plus with new coaches/front office adds as well. like chud signed gary, coaches come and go. when they get to new teams and need a _______ , well at carolina they a couple _______ . its a young mans game too, not just in age but $$$$$$. players under 5 years of play are cheaper compared to those above. just look at the current roster all the highest paid guys are "old" kalil, TD, olsen, stew, etc gross and smitty would be there too.

The majority of teams were in the 13-18 players remaining.  So as much as we think things are turning over, most teams are somewhat in the same boat. Needing to get better and having to do so on a budget. You have to make tough choices and let good players go elsewhere.

    • I wouldn't say he made him look bad, just expendable (and overpaid).
    • Good let them. Will just allow other good players to drop to us in round 2-4

    • And this is my problem.  Its not that he can or can't run from the shotgun. The problem is that he never has and you just don't know. Will he have the patience to wait beside the QB with the ball in his belly? And during that time the line is blocking and shifting in front of him. There is no definite "hole" to run to. After the QB finally leaves the ball to him, does he have the read-option vision to find that little crease in the line, plant his foot, and cut through it? Jonathan Stewart does, but Stew played in a spread, shotgun offense in college, so he already knew what he was doing. Can Fournette do that well? The answer at this point, since he's never been asked to, is "maybe". Do you spend the #8 overall pick rolling the dice on "maybe"? At a position that in general is the most short-lived in the NFL? Maybe DG and Rivera do exactly that.  If so, I can understand their gamble and would hope for the best. Fournette is a great talent.
