Panthers have a Jalen Coker problem.
WhoKnows replied to electro's horse's topic in Carolina Panthers
He won’t get a new contract this year. It will likely be before his 4th year. Panthers can use the RFA for a cheap year in 2027 and then give him a 3-4 year extension for 2028-2030/2031. All assuming he has a solid year in 2026 and we want to extend him. There’s just 0 reason for Panthers to do anything different as worst case is you get him for 2 more cheap years or for 1 more cheap year and a 1st round pick. -
A 100 point season elsewhere translates to an 80 point season under RBA. No question he's racking up points, but look at the Rangers and, specifically, his line. JT Miller, 32, $8M AAV for another 4 years beyond this. Trocheck, 32, $5.65M AAV for another 3 years. Zibanejad, 32, $8.5M AAV for another 4 years.... Thanks, but I'll take a 27-29 year old with an upside.

The amount of people in this thread that know nothing about NFL free agency rules is simply astounding. -

The guy paid on commission? I can guarantee you that’s what he’s saying actually. Risking commission on 1.08 million dollars for a chance at commission on 30 over 3 is an easy calculation to make. -
I definitely hear you there. I think that also had a lot to do with the drop off in QB play across the league. It has gotten worse and worse due to college coaches not really preparing kids to play at the next level anymore. They are just doing what they need to do to get wins. Who would've thought Matt Stafford would have this resurgence? Teams are holding on to old QBs now . They would've been a playoff team in the Cam year if so many players hadn't foregone the season and Cam didn't get covid. Then they made the playoffs in Mackorkle's first year. Then the great fall off began and that was due to his GM resume. Belichick definitely didn't have the greatest track record as a GM.

I estimate a two year deal with them buying his RFA year. And his agent not wanting to lock him in for longer.

There is a point there. I think it is also fair to recognize that Belichick failed to develop a successor. With ample time over all those seasons. It reinforces the school of thought that a lot of the success is due to who your QB is. No matter how good a defensive mind you are.

Ah, we have the core of the issue. Someone not using their brain and just simply looking at the league rules. The dumbing down of humanity keeps increasing. -
I have no problem signing him long term this offseason, but it would be in that 6.5-7M a year range

It’s clear. If you sit out and don’t accrue you go into the next season at the same level almost like the sit out year never happened. There’s no loophole to UFA after two accrued seasons. -

Yeah a returner with 74 catches, 1207 receiving yards and 7 TD's in his career at the point he was named a Pro Bowler. But since you don't think that matters, he was also a first team All Pro that season, as well. You can dig this hole as deep as you want but I have no idea what the point of this is for you. Just to be as wrong as possible as many times as possible? This is literally much ado about nothing. -

When people mentioned reasonable deals for a player in his position, you started talking about him holding out. What would he be holding out for? That's it, top league wideout money. Because that is what's next after Shaheed and the mid-level contracts that people suggested. To which you again replied about holding out. I jokingly sent a friend the video of Coker's dad dancing in the stands during the playoff game talking about how negotiations are going to be difficult. In actuality, they're not at all. And he's not going to hold out or he's going to get embarrassed. -

Which is why he’s a Panther for 2 more years at a fixed price with not much he can do. -

Actually upon further review it not actually clear what would happen. Google AI (I know) says “it may” lead them to being an ERFA again. -

Right because the CBA doesn’t have loopholes like that. It’s why people who sit out always come back to make sure the get the accrued year otherwise they are right back where they started. An ERFA can’t afford to miss most of the year as they are trying to look good for an extension. -
I got interested here because of Ricky Williams. Does Ricky Williams even have a case for the HOF? I had never considered him as a candidate. I looked it up. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/W/WillRi00.htm He had one killer season. 1800+ rushing yards. Did break 1000 yards rushing I think 5 times. 4 times in his first 5 years, only once in the 6 years afterwards. Pretty pedestrian numbers for season totals a few of those later years. I say no he wouldn’t get in herb or no herb, but I learned something. I did not realize he played for 11 years (with one full year suspension sandwiched in there). I had him in my mind as like a 7 or eight year player.

UFA's are players with four or more accrued seasons and an expired contract per NFL rules. Also, holding out means Coker does not accrue any more time, also per NFL rules. He is indeed correct that he would be an ERFA. This is why you don't see hold outs. The rules literally don't allow it to work at all. It would be career poison. https://operations.nfl.com/inside-football-ops/nfl-operations/nfl-free-agency/types-of-free-agents/ -
