Flyers looked dead at the end of the Pittsburgh series. If the team that was steamrolling in games 1-3 managed to close it out in 4 I would be more nervous but the Canes should win this in no more than 5. Flyers will probably steal one at home on the back of an incredible game from their goalie and some magic from their young up and comers but the canes should never be in real danger of losing this series.

I think the flyers blew the chance to close out the series in 4 by starting Vladar who is obviously hurt. Pittsburgh made the change at goalie and it seems to have energized them. If this series goes to 7 and Pittsburgh wins, Carolina will demolish them. The flyers are younger and faster and hungrier. Pittsburgh is the optimal matchup.

What did we get in the trade

I don’t know if they panicked, but I think they did have legit interest in Rodriguez and once he was gone they had to pivot. Depth on the d-line is definitely not going to hurt. I just think Anthony Hill has a very high ceiling to be a Micah Parsons level pass rusher and hits hard. Would have been an instant difference maker in pass rush situations.

If Rodriguez goes before the Panthers pick, they need to pick Anthony Hill Jr who will probably still be there. Slam dunk pick, if they pass on him I’d be livid. But, if they finally pick a center I’d also be very happy.

The more I think about this pick the more I like it. The Icky injury might end up being a blessing in disguise for everyone except Icky unfortunately. If Freeling pans out at LT the Panthers have a good player on a rookie contract at a premium position at a time when they’re going to need to potentially pay Bryce for his next contract. Icky was likely going to command a big salary jump for his next contract and now, there’s a strong justification he’s not going to be worth a big money extension until he rehabs and proves he can still play at a high level. Since he’s finishing his rookie deal this season, it will be interesting to see if the Panthers bring him back for the 2027 season. Obviously it’s too early to say and they will probably wait to see how the season pans out with Moton still elite but aging and clearly battling persistent injuries, and they need to see if Freeling can develop into a starter during his rookie year. But ultimately this might have opened up a huge chunk of salary cap for the next 4-5 years.
