All I want are smart moves. This is just like the Teddy move. We're acquiring a trash QB hoping desperately that he won't be trash for us. These moves usually turn out predictably. History isn't on our side here. Hell, Ya'll are both right. I agree that trading a 2nd for a guy that has been nothing but terrible so far seems a bit desperate, BUT, I want to see how all this plays out before I lose my poo. LG, you have to be impressed by last year's draft, right? Other than the 2 QB moves (and possibly giving CMC a kazillion dollar contract), what has this staff done that has hurt the franchise?

I never expected the top four to be at 8. But I’m cool with drafting Fields or Lance there. Just don’t see it being an option. IMO, Sam is a better option than Teddy, and actually saves us money this year (assuming we cut TB post 6/1). If we are able to get a rookie QB, we simply don't pick up his 5th year option. The only downside to this whole thing is having to part with next year's 2nd. But hell, maybe we'll get lucky and a change of scenery will make Sam the second coming of Joe Montana.

Panthers give Teddy permission to seek a trade

FWIW: -
I could still see that happening. We don't have to pick up Sam's 5th year option until after the draft.

I'm that boring old man who thinks that there's nothing better than a football game with a 10-12 score, so hell yeah build both lines! The game is won in the trenches.

So, if I'm reading OTC correctly, cutting Teddy post June 1 still saves us $8M towards the cap, which pays Darnold's salary with a couple of million to spare. Teddy gets $15 M from us (plus $5M next year) plus whatever the other team pays him to be a backup. -

Why would we give Darnold a chance to start when the Jets, who were a worse team last season, are saying he wasn't good enough for them? poo happens, coaches see players differently. -
Top 5 Per Position - Choose two

#3 QB would be like a Christmas miracle, and the topic has been thoroughly discussed, so I won't go there. For me, it's Pat Freirmuth at TE in the second (Pitts would be too expensive, IMO, at #8) and Sewell at #8. Surtain and Slater get honorable mentions in the first round. it would be hard to be mad about either of those 3 in the first round, and we should get to pick between at least 2 of them. -
Not until 2024! There's a lot of football between now and then.

Not bad, bonus points for the FB. I loves me a FB!

#8 Trey Lance, QB, NDSU #39 Dillon Radunz, OT, NDSU #73 Chazz Surratt MLB, UNC #113 Tre Norwood, CB/FS, OK #151 Trey Hill, C, GA #'s 193, 222, and 226...who knows? And yes...I realize that I have 3 Tre(y)'s on my mock.

A late round sleeper QB to watch out for...

Mond at 39 could be interesting if we land Slater or Sewell at #8. It would be a big gamble, but, if it paid off, Fitterer and Rhule would look like geniuses. -

They no longer need to BS, they are guaranteed one of the top 3 guys. -

ATL just restructured Matty Ice to all but guarantee he's their starter for the next 2 years; $65.4M dead money in 2021, and $40.5M in 2022. If Miami really wanted a QB, they'd have stayed at 3. Goff has dead money of $40.8M and $30.5M, so I don't really see them going QB. BUT, if we wanted to be sure, I wouldn't mind seeing what Miami wanted for #6. -
I agree, except big fat pass on Jimmy G. A; big ole cap hit to the tune of $26.4M this year and $1.4M dead money next year. B; injuries. C; he's gonna get cut anyway.
-
Just for sheets and giggles...would Minshew's be about the same? Honestly, I might like him more, and he'd be $9M cheaper this year.
-
We can reasonably guess that #1, 2 and 3 will all be QB. Even with their offseason moves, I could still see ATL, Detroit or Miami picking the 4th best QB. Or, more likely trading back to a QB needy team. (side note: I'd definitely consider trading up to #6 if Lance or Fields is still available. I don't think the lions are set on Goff for 2021) So, that means that Jones is most likely our best shot, in the draft, at #8. And he may be gone, who knows. I'm likely drafting Sewell or Slater in this scenario, and either trying for Minshew or rolling with Teddy. Sorry for the rambling post, I've been off grid for several days and am still trying to wrap my head around WTF is happening.
-
Stay at 8 and pick Slater.
-
Can't really disagree with your logic, but I'd keep Thomas and Jackson unless we get a definite upgrade. Jackson is still our best CB right now and played with turf toe all last season. Undersized? Yes, but a good coverage guy. Thomas is a pretty good blocker, I can see him being more of a h-back and still contributing for cheap.
-
Agree. At 39, there will be a starting LT, CB, FS or MLB if we need them, all on a cheap 4-year rookie deal.
-
I don't know. After losing Manhertz and Armah, I could see Thomas filling more of the H-back role. Arnold won't be much of a blocker on running downs.
-
Barbara and Dan both need to add a little weight IMO, but they both definitely offer positional value.
