Hypothetically speaking... comp for Dalton

Age isn't a concern until it just suddenly is. More of these guys go out looking like Peyton Manning(minus NFL gifted ring) than they do Tom Brady. -
Hypothetically speaking... comp for Dalton
kungfoodude replied to Lurk21's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well he was a 3x Pro Bowler..... -
But also immediately incurs an additional dead cap lump sum, making it $8.2 total dead cap. The question is how much of that is "new" dead cap. I think it would be about an additional $6 mil, correct? If OTC is correct about the prorated bonus money, anyway. Either way, I am curious to see when they opt to move him. If he lasts into the 2025 season, I will interpret that as Tepper still doing Tepper things.
-
It does acceralte to the current league year. If you read the rule, that is what happens. That is why they posted the $8 mil dead cap hit. That's all new dead cap.
-
Well Dalton's contract runs out at the end of this season. Even if we do resign him, there is no guarantee he will be there more than a couple of more seasons. I think some of it will just boil down to what Johnson thinks of this scenario and the money we offer. If he is looking to win, this isn't the spot. If he is looking to get paid, it might be.

Cam Ward.....opinions (AKA A Thread About Shedeur Sanders)

It's not size, it's longevity -
I would not say he is a proven #1. That is what he is hoping to prove here. Dude, to be this cap strapped and also talent deficient is nuts.
-
Yes, hence why you spend WISELY.
-
Yeah, he is developing well. I have high hopes he can be what Thomas was supposed to be.
-
Yeah, people don't realize how bad our cap situation is. We can't be this low on the talent scale and also in cap hell.
-
Yeah, he really needs to be getting his reps limited as soon as Thomas gets healthy. He is a project guy at the moment.
-
Wait, wait....this is still not correct. The prorated amount on the 2024 cap is literally the 2nd year amount. He still has two years left on the deal. By rule, the dead cap for those last two years accelerates on to the current year(2024) and the following(2025). So it is an ADDITIONAL hit this league year. Just think of it as him being cut post June 1st(essentially what this is minus the actual base salary hit).
-
I think it is going to likely boil down to him not wanting to be here so we might have to make a big overpay again.
-
I see what you are saying, essentially this is money already on the cap because it is factored in. Then the remainder hits as 2025 dead cap. I wasn't thinking about that correctly as already being accounted for in the cap calculation. Given that, it actually would be reasonable to trade him with some limited finagling. That being the case, they should consider a decent offer. IMO, the ask should be a 3rd rounder. Overplaying the hand isn't really much of a risk. 4th rounders and lower are generally lower hit rate guys so the attraction to dump him for a 4th now versus a 5th or lower in the offseason isn't compelling. Wait it out until you get the price you want by the trade deadline. We aren't in a weak position this time.
-
The intrigue begins and ends at being in cap hell without the ability to build a team around him. The one thing he has shown conclusively is that he is unable to elevate players around him, so bringing him here with substantially less offensive weapons than even the Jags have is pretty insane.
-
Yeah, I think the odds of locking up Diontae beyond this season are slim to none. No matter, it gives our guys like Mingo and XL a measuring stick to compare against.
-
Diontae isn't really a top tier one. Good player, no doubt but there aren't many teams he would be a #1. XL....well.....I have a pretty low ceiling for him personally so I just hope he can clear those bars. He's a pretty big project for an older player. I hope we have a coaching staff that can develop him.
-
Yeah, outside the offensive line I am not sure any of these are tracking the way you are describing them. Way more questions than answers in that list. This is a post season thread with 17 games of ammo behind it.

This is calling a lot of shots before many pitches have been thrown.

Cam Ward.....opinions (AKA A Thread About Shedeur Sanders)

In the mix I can buy but starting? No thank you. Especially someone as bad as Lock. But, you will see in the free agent QB pool for 2025 that there are not going to be many better starting options than Dalton. It's a very weak pool. -

BPA all the way. We need just about everything outside of maybe OL(in the first round anyway). -

Dalton can still be a starter but at a limited ceiling at his age. Also, that cliff could suddenly get here pretty quickly. That remains to be seen. He is a three time Pro Bowler with 164 starts in his career. Lock is different. He has never played above a lower tier 2nd string QB level. He is a nightmare to think about starting all season. No offense, but that is a terrible idea. -

I think he might get some part time work at both positions depending on who drafts him. I mean the wear and tear in college of being a two way player. That's literally the equivalent of almost six seasons of snaps(minus the injury time last year). That is a very concerning amount of mileage already on that body. Is he the best talent in this draft? Very possibly so, I just worry about the longevity having sustained such an insane workload. -

Lol. On what planet would Lock be starting over Dalton? -

Hunter is a gamble. He gets all this hype for playing two ways but I don't like the long term of a guy putting double the mileage on his body. That's a major concern. We already have one Horn.
