Although I agree with this, there's reasonable disagreement, and there's just bitching. And while I support any panther fan's right to bitch here if they want, I do get tired of it. It is a big reason my readership is spotty outside the season. Also, not saying you are primarily just bitching either but there's a few examples in this thread, haha. Not suggesting mods change anything because censorship would be worse I think. Heh.

Winston has unquestionably accomplished more to date than Darnold - which isn't saying a ton to be honest. But Winston had a MUCH better team around him his first couple years... and Winston has a higher INT% than Darnold at 3.4% for his career, whereas Darnold is 3.2%. And really they both had similar TD% numbers their first couple years in the league (Winston - 4.1%, 4.9%; Darnold - 4.1%, 4.3%)... Of course, Winston has built on that (4.7% for his career), whereas Darnold cratered with Gase last year and that hurt his career numbers (3.7%). How much of that is Darnold vs Gase? Hard to say. Limited sample of Tannehill is pretty crazy to see Tannehill's decline once Gase took over, and subsequent recovery once he left. I hope Darnold does the same, but I am at best cautiously optimistic.

Darnold is a gamble, but a huge gamble?? We're talking a second round pick next year which is basically a third this year. That isn't a huge gamble at all. Much less of one than either reaching for a meh QB at 8 or trading assets to move up. As a huge Fields fan, though, if he's there I think we should take him at 8. I doubt he's there.

Ideally if we miss the top prospects, we get a vet backup to help our young QB room. There's so much value after the first round this year in OL and CBs, I don't want us to spend a pick on another project at QB when we just effectively spent next year's 2nd on one.

Colin Cowherd: Matt Kalil and Sam Darnold
mav1234 replied to DaveThePanther2008's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think there's a pretty good chance it is one or the other, honestly. When someone has the raw talent he has, it seems like they are most likely to either be a great starter or a total bust. Last year Darnold was unquestionably in the later category, but the situation with Gase etc makes all this hard to read. -

It is definitely unique. He certainly showed much less than Tannehill overall, but he had much less time to do so before Gase got to him, too. I'm cautiously optimistic about him, and like the flexibility he gives to the team this draft. I was very worried we were going to reach for a QB. -

When you watch his highlights, Darnold makes some special plays. The problem is that the plays he makes between the highlights are often real problematic. Hopefully good coaching can help clean that up. We saw how Gase took Tannehill, who appeared to make good and safe decisions with the ball (~2% of his throws as INTs, which is find for a young player), to a terrible decision maker (>3% as INTs over his 2 years with gase). Can Darnold recover how Tannehill did? Time will tell... -
Dunno how Darnold will work out but I'll be optimistic he could be good. If not, I hope he's so very bad he gets us a very high pick next year.

Teddy hasn't reached out to Sam yet following the trade
mav1234 replied to JABANOG's topic in Carolina Panthers
Some of you guys are ridiculous. We all know he's gone. He isn't talking crap. He's minding his own business. This seeks like a mature and fine way to handle this. Also why do people think he has burner social media accounts? Lol. I've not seen anything like that confirmed. -
What are the numbers that will make you believe??
mav1234 replied to WOW!!'s topic in Carolina Panthers
Less concerned with the numbers than his overall decision making and ability to make something happen with the game on the line. IMO, I'm treating this like his sophomore season in terms of expectations... I want to see someone that shows flashes of greatness, limits repeated mistakes, and improves over the course of a season. Having him play like an all pro, as some seem to want, would be great, but I don't think it is likely given how much work Darnold is going to need. -
Breer talks about Gase (and Tannehill; oh, and Darnold)
mav1234 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
I don't think Darnold will ultimately end up an All Pro, but it is worth noting that people touting how Tannehill showed more before Tennessee are right... but he showed more before Gase showed up, and he looked arguably as bad as Darnold did while Gase was there... Tannehill went from ~2% ints thrown before Gase, a fine number, to 3+%, which is bad decision making indeed. He went from multiple 4k yard, 20+ TD seasons with low int% to being a total disaster of decision making. But as a rookie, he showed as much or maybe less than Darnold did as a rookie. Hell, even his second year was pretty comparable to Darnold's... The difference is, Tannehill's HUGE downtown happened in his 5th year, when Gase joined the Fins (and Tannehill got injured), while Darnold was exposed to Gase in his 2nd year, and the huge potential so many saw near the end of Darnold's first year did not seem to be realized. The huge knock on Tannehill in his last couple years in Miami was how bad his decision making had become. What's the big knock on Darnold? So there's reasons to be optimistic, and IMO that is why we made the trade. -

Right, but I wouldn't be surprised if we draft someone in a later round if it's somebody they like. -

I wouldn't assume the Panthers avoid drafting a QB. Darnold wasn't handed the keys to the franchise. He's going to be given a chance to compete. -
Why not? He wasn't bad (especially for the Saints) and seems like a pretty good person.
-
Honestly overall I like the trade. I do think a non conditional 2nd seems high... but ah well.
-
A 2nd round pick next year is still a 2nd round pick...
-
Don't like the 2nd next year in there too.. Seems way too steep.

PFF grade on throws past first read since 2019

sure, there is some of that, but it is more than that. there are historical trends and at this point it just feels predictable what adjectives are being used for what prospects. blech. -

The narrative around Justin Fields not working hard and not being a smart player is beginning to wander into Tinderbox territory, but it is the narrative around him that is developing. It is depressing that such a false narrative persists, and it is so easy to dispel with even a minor amount of effort. -
Sounds like this happens all the time. Where are the examples of the dozen+ fake claims against someone?

Watson made statements regarding the victims careers and prospects therein that were interpreted as threats by the victims. As they didn't relate to physical violence, hard to know. Is it normal to ask for a NDA type of agreement with a masseuse? That was a pattern I noticed, was attempts to get many of these women to agree to something more formal not to discuss the massage, which seemed weird.
