Heh, I was just thinking this. The sad thing is we miss the decent posts that do come up mid week occasionally, which just makes it worse... I'm just kinda bummed and extra negativity in my life isn't necessary, so I'll probably be back next week for the next game. Winning cures all ills and all that, so we will see

Positionless Players and the Problem with Being Anti Meta.
mav1234 replied to TheMaulClaw's topic in Carolina Panthers
The defense and the offense both seem to poo the bed in the 2nd half. Difference is the capital we have spent on D. -
I don't get the coddled narrative... In the regular season he isn't being coddled at all.
-
I agree with this. I think deep ball is a mix of rushing throws because he doesnt trust the O Line and not yet having the chemistry he needs to know where the guys will be.
-
you're ignoring the 20 (lol) projected rushing TDs. which, I don't think he will get. I think he'll probably end up in the mid 30s total, with more passing TDs as the year goes on (esp now with CMC back). TD/INT ratio is honestly pretty deceiving... Last year tho Tannehill threw an INT on only 1.5% of his passes... which put him in the company of Rodgers, Mahomes, Watson... That said... Tannehill this year has thrown an INT on 2% of his throws. Sam has thrown one on 2.1%.

If Darnold's rushing TDs are included I think he is right up around 5th or 6th in total TDs by a QB, too (also doing the same for other QBs, obviously).
-
Thanks man! I really hope Saleh can turn it around for you guys, and that Wilson can get the help he needs to excel. The Panthers worked hard (and I'm sure still do) on consistency in Darnolds mechanics and it looks like it's paying off.

Meanwhile, over at that other expansion team...

Her career shouldn't be fuged and she shouldn't be getting harassed for what was honestly pretty silly and ridiculous on her part. Meyers job is in jeopardy not because of what he did in the video itself, but because he left his team obstensibly to see his family and ended up going viral in a bar... All while his team just suffered a huge loss and was on an extended losing spree. -
Oh for sure. In his first year as a starter for us he's on pace for 40 TDs, lol. And it feels like he still has room to grow. We haven't had that kind of QB production since 2015...
-
I don't personally care about rates etc. Im just looking for Darnold to take the opportunities presented to him. If he never gets thm, he's probably playing so well it doesn't even matter. But I think he will. Before Dallas I may have argued this team could win without great QB play... Not anymore tho. it's clear we need Sam to be all he can be, and he has exceeded expectations so far. I hope we get him some OL help somehow tho, it's unfair to ask him to run like hell all game.

Realistically speaking there's a lot of ways he can show the clutch I'm looking for. Tbh, he has shown an ability to stem bleeding and secure wins, and also lead consecutive scoring drives while we were down, both things that are very promising. So, it's more about building on that, having that consistency. If he was never put in a position the rest of the season to lead game winning drives or something but continues at his current clip of production, Id probably still be sold. Personally, I'd just like to see him lead the team to wins when given that opportunity to really secure his place here. On the other hand, if he does that but then sucks in other ways... It's all about overall production and opportunity. I'm not looking for single stats or things in isolation. And of course I don't make the decisions anyway.

Lol, what? This is a message board. We are here to talk about players... Who says I'm not enjoying Sam's play? I can enjoy his play and be happy with his progress and still think he can do better and show more. I'm very far from a Sam hater. I want him to be the best QB he can be, and the best the Panthers could hope for. Doesn't mean he is there just yet, but I'm hopeful.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RodgAa00.htm Rodgers had 26 game winning drives and 18 4th quarter comebacks. That's damn clutch, especially since he didn't play for his first 3 years. Sam doesn't need to be someone else, lol. YOU brought up Rodgers. I just said I want to see Sam have to take advantage of situations in which he could lead us to wins. It'll show he's clutch, which I think he can be. The problem with Teddy was not stats or missing deep balls, it was the 0 and 8 or whatever it was on chances to win us games. Sam needs to be a person capable of leading this team to wins. So far, promising start. But I want more than just "better than Bridgewater". I want our own franchise leader. Not a copy of some other star player, just Sam Darnold showing he can be our guy.
-
He also has 26 game winning drives. Nobody could argue Rodgers can't win the game when it's on the line. I'd like us to have the same with Darnold. With as good as our defense can be, Darnold may not get a ton of opportunities for come backs, but I'd love to see him shine when that opportunity presents itself.
-
Clearly an alpha, Fitt was right
-
Darnold could use some 4th quarter comebacks, game winning drives, etc. Those are more important than stats alone. But I think they'll come.
-
One reason this feels good is how he was being linked to TB. For years we felt we weren't a place players would want to go... Things have changed.
-
A few of our OL look decent to good in run blocking actually. But pass blocking? Ugh.
-
We seem to just "stick with whats working" until it doesn't, then take a few series after opponents half time adjustments to make our own...

I think we are about to say goodbye to Urban Meyer. -

Ownership might have a light talking to about his behavior if he'd won any games or had a team that was showing real growth or potential... But you're right. When you aren't winning, everything else matters more. -
His scrambling ability is probably the only reason he isn't injured yet, heh. I really hope we find a solution to give him a bit more time. To the OPs point I feel he isn't comfortable in a clean pocket because it's hard to know how long he has to go thru his reads.
-
He's showing impressive scrambling ability in general. I think the playmakers he has available are really opening things up for him... I'm hoping the chemistry he has with DJ sticks around after CMCs return.
-
Darnold is on pace for more than 40 TDs... which is impressive. I don't know how you discount his rushing TDs in today's league. Especially with how we've struggled in the red zone last year without them... Sure, I would prefer passing TDs, but I'll take any TDs we can get in the red zone. Darnold does need to improve but every QB has missed opportunities... I'm excited to see how he grows thru the season.
