Charles Robinson w/ Yahoo's training camp report
strato replied to Icege's topic in Carolina Panthers
Thank you. He could have said that. I mean how does the depth chart help to differentiate positions? I guess if they want G/T out of a guy he gets a specialist for each. Probably good. -

What was the stuff about 3 OL coaches and depth chart groupings? Specific player grouping. What does that mean? -

Sorry man I figured maybe you would like to hunt it down. I didn’t mean to insult the Legend. -

That is why I could never see Reich endorsing the pick. That was the thing that I could never be sold on (except by him in private), and I mark the dysfunction as starting right there. -
Basically, it boils down to life isn’t fair and wtf can you do about it. It was the ammo people needed, and he was a long shot. I really hated it for him. edit: salt in the wound was it was his secondary falling short. And they suffered from lacking his full attention, I think. Had to have an effect. And Al Holcomb was supposed to handle adjusting that also. oh, and the local roots thing. Yep he did but he meddled like hell with that too.

Unnecessary Bluntness podcast on Canales and preseason approach

Better sense to use the Lewis money and put it into C and another G maybe? who was out there? We know the (IMO erroneous) Brees analogy that people make with Young. We know what they did to help Brees, and we know that that was the idea here. They copied that idea. So, that’s a choice they had to make. We didn’t see probably the second guard coming until it was happening, I don’t remember much debating of it until after. Might be wrong on that. I remember realizing we really needed a C and then came to think they were not going to draft one high. There were priorities because you can’t upgrade everything at once, this is what they tried. Doesn’t look good, but hasn’t been proven to not work yet. So here we are. Also, 17 games where people predict us to win 4 or 5 mostly. 12 or 13 losses. If it takes two or three games (I think more) to get things maybe working a little better, we need to keep that in mind. EDIT: And when people wonder why some are irritated at Young in all of these threads, everything connects to him. There is no degree of separation, as it were. Exhibit number 1 here is the Brees treatment of the OL. What if we didn’t have to think like that when we assemble an OL? Also, I have said I believe a factor in the C thing was they did not want to put a rookie down there because, they don’t want to put more stuff on Bryce. That’s me spitballing though, the other is not. -

One thing, if he starts out bench worthy, Dalton probably won’t hold up. So he’ll likely get another chance. Maybe a benching would do him some good. If he is coasting thinking he has it handled, at all, it definitely would. Which, I don’t know what he thinks. (I do agree, basically. Going by last year he was overwhelmed physically) -

I saw a headline referring to him as ‘Panthers legend’. I liked him well enough, and he did some good things, but that gave me a chuckle. -
Thanks for clarifying and I felt that but there was plenty of that talk when the deed was done. I agree with all of it except the hard quota stuff (which you did not endorse, it just a general opinion). I think he deserved the consideration, 100%. I also think I have to submit to the people making the argument about how could you let Mike Evans burn us three times for what was likely a division title. I could not, in good faith, excuse that. That was a tough one because I think we needed leadership of the type he provided, and I do not personally elevate people to head coach consideration based primarily on x and o stuff. (which, it seems like everyone else is doing that). All I knew was they gave him little in the secondary pretty much annually and he produced with it. He produced with the whole team once he was given it. Look at the W-L records of the people that preceded him under Tepper. Who among them won 6 in a full year or otherwise? Not a single person. And what did they do without him? Lol.

Reality sucks sometimes, but that is the deal right there with his leadership. Right now the best vocal leadership he can really do is take accountability in the locker room. . -

Have to agree. It is why him becoming decent and leading the team with his play is mandatory. He is in no position to speak to proven players without that credibility. So we for sure are suffering a crisis of leadership until he fixes it. -
That is subjective. Canales was a WR coach before helping with QBs, I would think he learned a little something. I go to Russel Wilson every time I think about what WR for Bryce Young. Run around, heave it high and hope, and have a guy out there flagging it down. That doesn’t require greatly polished route running. I look at Young and don’t see any normal type deep threat pick being worth it because he has not shown any consistency on his throws (I guess maybe he has with those pinpoint on the sideline deep throws, maybe that is intentional?). Okay I really don’t believe that he has that going on but okay lets wait and see.

That was an issue. And if you were against paying him you were called names. As I remember back, the QB salary ceiling was starting to seriously escalate. The feeling was that Cam wanted top dollar and there was definite skepticism on my part because of his injury issues. We really were not dealing with something you could say, oh that’ll heal and it will be back to normal or 90% back (which I would still have taken, I thought he was better when forced to take something off the ball). It was the timing of it that made it so hard, because you not only had to keep paying him you had to probably double it.

Yeah that is something I see too and feel like it is partly a result of uncertainty about how to go forward. They have the mandate, I certainly believe that, to do everything possible to make it work with Young at QB. Which lands them squarely here: one foot and half a brain in Bryce offense land, but the other foot and 1/2 brain are still in ‘this is the NFl’ land. They are conflicted, sitting between fantasy and reality. My opinion. edit: we haven’t seen anything yet so maybe there is this super tailored just for Bryce that negates all his disadvantages. It would be the only way forward, but have they bought in enough to go that route?* more edit: *Because they could decide to half ass it with Bryce and look at fixing the rest of the mess this year and do the deed for a new QB next year?

I don’t have a negative for this line (therefore positive) As far as this suppression of rational analysis characterized by certain people as hate and negativity, suppressing the truth doesn’t make it untrue. I don’t have but one negative for this post. (positive) -
Panthers release a kicker, shore up offensive line

I think it’s hard for people to forget him blowing the game for us under Wilks. That was pretty bad and not even playoff pressure. That tweet about Pinero being perfect today, said the pressure was off. Okay, so is he the man only when there is no pressure? I am not giving answers, just saying what questions people might have. -

I tend to agree with that last paragraph. Not going to be right on all 4 probably, but I get it. Everyone said, pretty sure, that this was more than a one year fix and the team put center a little down the to do list. I had ideas as to why, but don’t know. I just want this QB properly tested, trained and evaluated correctly whatever that ends up being. I doubt I’ll be for moving on if he proves himself, but the question needs to be answered this season, IMO. No slow arc, no long trek to enlightenment. This year. If he sucks again we don’t need to be drafting around him any more. Which, not taking that C, was. Among other things, Evero might have an opinion on a player and be shut down because they want to draft offense... . -

I like that the offense is running I wish we didn’t have through this coming year, and last year. fill in the other positive, defense something something -
With Reich, would he have been working with Young, or Stroud? If we go by crappy pre destined fate, Young. I'll say this about Reich as OC, we would have avoided Brown. I think he was a lot more of a dysfunctional factor than people took note of. Here is non football... I was a musician for decades. In the ‘80s I took a house band gig at a place, for the winter. (they brought in expensive regional bands in season and went with locals for the winter). They wanted to do it again the next year. I left because I hated that gig and did not want to go back (it was kind of like watching the Panthers under Tepper, a thankless chore). Can you guess? The band I joined ended up doing that gig that year. I didn’t quit until they said they were going to do it again. Now can you guess? Yep, 3rd band went into that gig. Thankfully just for that one season. Fate is absolutely a thing sometimes, and not always kind.

You can’t see things so great, and I know it will happen in games sometimes, but in the completion there (in the last twitter video of 9 completing the pass to 5) were almost or right at 6 seconds before the ball was thrown. If multiple people chase him for 6 seconds someone will catch him, I think. Most times. If they are going to make that a staple, there has to be some policing of the 6 because otherwise he is hit or interfered with. Hmm, 9-5 has sort of a cachet if they actually would turn out to be a good thing.

I am pretty down on about all media. Across the spectrum of issues, they all seem to only push a narrative, in service of something.... they pushed Bryce Young for whatever reason. Same with Williams I guess. Smart people don’t just listen and take it for truth, they go and look for themselves. And you can’t always see that, but sometimes you can.

I love Wilks and think he was the best choice which I argued then, but I never felt at all that the decision was based on his skin. More, just failure to recognize leadership that could possibly get this ship back on course. I would agree it was based at least partially on Wilks not being a yes man. And Tepper’s obsession for offense and choosing and developing a franchise QB At All Costs, which certain costs Wilks would not go for. edit: and you have to know the QB and offense were big parts of the interview for the job, I’d love to know what WIlks had to say.

Well, Young is a one to three year issue depending. And could be gone by next year or the following . Tepper is here and will still be here and is a much bigger issue. Young and Burns and all the rest are symptoms of the disease. Gotta cure the disease. I’m sure Tepper gets the best medical care so he isn’t going away. Gotta hope he is cured of his impulsiveness and false impression that he knows how to do football.
