When did you give up on Matt Rhule?
LinvilleGorge replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
What? 6-10 to 7-9 to 12-4. Rhule went 5-11 last year and is 3-4 this year with the trend arrow pointing straight down. -

There was a better QB who signed with Buffalo as a FA. There was a better QB who was traded to Philly for a 6th. There was a good rookie OG available when we drafted a long snapper. Christensen actually literally sacked Darnold himself today. He literally tacked Sam Darnold himself. Tremble looks mediocre. He may or may not pan out. Thomas looked better as a rookie and he didn't. Keep drinking that Kool-Aid I guess. -
A critique of Darnold through 4 games

I don't disagree. He looks as bad as he did in his worst games. He hasn't quite yet hit that Pats game low water mark for us yet, but he's trending to have one of those games if we keep trotting him out there. -

I still had a sliver of hope when I made this thread, but I was concerned. The problems I saw in NY were starting to show up in a major way. That trend has continued and he's in full blown Jets mode now. Darnold is broken. Honestly, he's probably going to have to earn a backup role in the NFL after this. He'll be brought in somewhere to compete, but I don't think anyone will gift wrap a roster spot for him. -
What's confusing? He's playing pretty disastrously.

Yep. When Stafford was like, "LOL! No thanks." it seems like we panicked. Had we stayed patient we would've landed Darnold for considerably less. Having no fallback plan with no legit backup was a huge mistake. End up getting Darnold for say a 3rd, then toss the Jags that 6th to get Minshew to have a legit fallback plan. Honestly, if we had a legit backup, I think Sam would've gotten the hook last week and the backup would've gone into today's game as the starter with a full week's preparation. We've see enough from Sam to know he's not the answer and now we have to stomach eating that 5th year option that we picked up for some reason I'd like to see someone ask Rhule and Fitts about just to watch them squirm. -

I ain't even mad at Darnold. He is who I thought he was. I just can't figure out how or why our brain trust convinced themselves he was the answer. -

If you don't have a QB you don't stand a chance to consistently compete in this league. -

Where's the evidence they can build a program? We keep making idiotic decisions at QB. We continue to neglect the OL. Our veteran acquisitions this offseason look awful. Our rookie class looks not great. This team is worse than last year's. -

Looked around the NFL lately? Throwing the ball 35+ times a game is becoming commonplace. -

Honestly, I had a foot way out the door when he showed he learned nothing from the Teddy mistake and went out and pursued Darnold rather than draft a QB. -
srsly what made Matt Rhule such a hot commodity?
LinvilleGorge replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
No clue. He only beat two top 25 teams in his entire college career and those two teams were barely ranked ECU and Navy teams that disappeared from the rankings after losing to Temple before ending up .500ish teams. He never best a ranked team at Baylor. -
I would say that IF we weren't completely spiraling. If we continue to play like we did today, Thule won't get another season. He was brought here to change the culture. It looks like the team isn't buying in and he brought in a TON of his guys into the lockerroom. If he can't get this team to buy in, then he's not cut out for the NFL.

He really doesn't. Rhule signed a 7 year, $60M contract. After this season, $17M of that is already sunk so there's "only" $43M left? You really think Tepper is gonna let $43M stand in his way of parting with the guy torpedoing his $2.2B investment in the Panthers? If Tepper becomes convinced that Rhule is the problem he's gone.

5-3 at half... LOL! What is this, lacrosse?

It was always horrible and when I tried to pump the brakes on the early success, I was "just being a hater". Same thing last year. When you bring a vet QB (Sorry, Rhule. Sam Darnold is NOT "basically a rookie.") it takes a few games for opposing DCs to get the relevant film they need to study to gameplan. The vet QB has a HUGE advantage during that short window. Once there's some game film to study, that's when the truth comes out. The truth last year with Teddy was disappointing, but expected. The truth this year with Darnold is disastrous, but again... expected. They both turned out to be exactly what they'd always shown to be. Teddy a marginal starter/good backup type. Sam Darnold an outright bust. It is what is is. It's just alarming our brain trust keeps getting duped into making mistakes that I can sit on my couch beer in hand and point out exactly where, how, and why they're fuging up.

I didn't want Trask at all, but I would've rather spent a 2nd on him on a cheap contract than sent a 2nd, 4th, and 6th for Sam Darnold and then picked up his 5th year option. No contest. I'd rather have Trask, the additional cap space, and additional 4th and 6th round picks.
-
Why not? We're getting smashed and he doesn't have a contract extension yet. It's a smart business decision.

It's good to see that knee injury didn't ruin Joe Burrow. Damn, that's dude's a baller. I was singing his praises last year saying his ability to throw on the move and from weird positions/angles was special. He doesn't have a cannon of an arm, but he can seemingly throw the exact same ball whether he's in a clean pocket, running for his life, throwing off the back door, whatever. That's special. Closer to home, the demise of the NFC South was overstated. The Falcons best the Dolphins today to get to .500. The Bucs curbstomped the Bears to get to 6-1. The Saints are significant favorites over the Seahawks tonight on a game that would get them to 4-2. The division overall is damn good and we look virtually certain to be the bottom dwellers. We're the only team in the division with a losing record. The Chiefs are struggling mightily giving more credence to the reality of the post-SB loss hangover.

Nah, I would've said the same to you.
