1980 was the first time the NFL draft was televised. Chet Simmons, president of the year-old network ESPN, asked then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle (left) if ESPN could broadcast the event. Rozelle’s response? “Why would you want to do that?” In 2013, nearly 8 million people watched the draft on TV.

Late April, 1994; the Panthers are still a year away from existing as a full fledged team.

My best friend calls me up and says "Hey, me and Johnny are gonna watch the NFL Draft on ESPN.  Wanna join us?"

I respond with something like "Man, if I ever get to the point where I'm so addicted to football that I actually take time out to watch the NFL Draft, just get me some professional help"

He managed to talk me into it anyway, and as a result I was watching when Bill Tobin went on his "Who the hell is Mel Kiper Jr" rant.

Kept watching with the same buddies for close to ten years after that.  Every year when they introduced Kiper, all of us would say in unison "Who in the hell is Mel Kiper Jr"

Live far away from those friends now, but still have the memories, still watch the draft, and still haven't sought professional help.

Good times :D

    • What people fail to understand is Lance had a college career that lasted about as long as teenage boys first intercourse.  To say he was raw was an understatement.  So much so that even a QB whisperer had a difficult time molding him into a polished NFL product on top of multiple nagging injuries.  The dud is in his mid-twenties, finally healthy and little miles on the tread.  Low risk, high reward.  If he's available, it would be stupid not to kick the tires.  It took Darnold and Mayfield to hit their 3rd or 4th team for things to finally click.  This is Lance's 3rd stop, I believe.  It's either time for it to click for him or be relegated to a full time backup. Roll the dice....
    • Wrong.  At least we put a QB sneak in the play book and and add plays over 20 yards.
    • I don’t know if people realize that Evan’s was one of the top TE prospects in college  before having some horrible injuries. I wanna say he had two major injuries in back to back seasons which limited his play and dropped his draft stock.
