Throwback Hoover helping groom his own replacement......

One of the last of a dying breed is doing the unthinkable in the current economy — helping to train his likely replacement.

Camp schedule

All practices at Wofford College are free and open to the public with each session lasting between 90 minutes and two hours. Times are subject to change without notice.

Thursday — 3:10 p.m.

Friday — 9:10 a.m., 6:40 p.m.

Saturday — 11 a.m. Fan Fest at Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, N.C.)

Injury update

-- LB Thomas Davis banged his right knee in the afternoon practice and was attended to on the field.

-- G Duke Robinson returned for the afternoon workout, a day after being carted to the locker room for what coach John Fox called heat exhaustion.

-- Guard C.J. Davis (ankle) missed both practices.

Carolina Panthers fullback Brad Hoover has spent nine seasons, all with the Carolina Panthers, slamming into opposing linebackers to open running lanes.

In April’s draft the Panthers used a fourth-round pick to select Tony Fiametta, a pure blocking back from Syracuse.

“I try to help him,” Hoover said after Tuesday’s practice at Wofford College. “Just because I didn’t have guys to really show me the position when I started playing fullback. I want to be the guy that gives him advice and help him, but not do too much because it is a competition between us. He knows that, and I know that and I can’t take that for granted. Tony’s a nice guy and I can’t fault him, so I have to at least help him somewhat.”

With football teams at all levels using more one-back sets, players like Hoover and Fiametta are becoming museum pieces.

“I think it’s going to come and go,” said Hoover. “Right now I feel it’s sort of fading away as far as there being a lot of fullbacks in the league and teams using them. I think eventually it’s just like a cycle, they’ll come back and go away, come back and go away.”

In Carolina’s smash-mouth offense there remains a need for someone to plow the road in front of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Hoover ran the ball just nine times last season but was a key component in a rushing attack that produced 152.3 yards per game, third-best in the NFL.

Hoover continued working with the first-team offense and the punt protection team during Tuesday’s camp practice. Fiametta was getting snaps with the second unit. The Panthers have carried two fullbacks in the past with Hoover and Nick Goings, but Goings was a versatile threat who could fill in at tailback.

Hoover has been a Panther longer than anyone save kicker John Kasey. Not bad for the former Ledford High School standout from Thomasville who entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Western Carolina University.

Given the demands of his position, Hoover should be slowing down.

Love Hoov, always have. Helluva player and person.

His soon to be/assumed replacement Tony appears to be a good one, he is truly HUGE. His biceps are almost twice the size of Hoov's from what I've seen at training camp this week. He signed a couple of autographs for me too, and seems like a real nice guy as well. I'll tell you one thing, the guy is put together like a tank, and I think we did good, and Hoover is doing even better being the class act he always has been.

Kasay was holding Fiametta's baby(in a baby stroller) as they rode off the field in a golf cart back to the locker room Monday I think it was. Kinda funny. :D

EDIT: Oh yeah, also got a few auto's from Hoov, and asked him what he thought about Tony, and he wasn't short on words telling me he liked him a lot, and thought he was gonna do just fine. Forgot to add that first time. :cheers2:

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
