Discussion on Local Sports Radio

Speaking of local sports radio, kudos to Chris Kroeger for making late afternoons on WFNZ listenable again.

Most of us had a "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" type celebration when Marc James announced he was leaving.  And granted, there wasn't much to have to follow,  Nails on a chalkboard, a chorus of crying babies or a rotation of Yoko Ono music all would have been significant improvement over Marc James.  But Kroeger is a legitimately good balance of knowledgeable and entertaining.

WFNZ finally did something right.

Borrowing a quote from a philosopher but  luck is the intersection where preparation meets opportunity.  The other component of this statement which may be relative is that sometimes preparation creates opportunity.  I think we capitalized on both of these fronts last season.

Of course, nobody is suggesting that teams do not prepare.  Preparation is the equalizer, where luck, or opportunity, is the difference make in so many games.

A game is decided by 2-3 big plays--10-15 seconds of the 60 minutes and the fruit of a week of preparation. Many times it is a glitch in preparation that determines the outcome--nobody practices turnovers.  A mental error.  A lapse in judgement.  A bad call.  An injury---luck, in other words, whether it be good or bad, it opportunity for someone.

Of course, I am using luck loosely, but every play is designed to score a TD on offense and every defensive call is intended to shut down the offense.  If everyone executes to the best of their abilities, the best football players would win. The good teams may not run as fast or be as strong as a bad team, but they minimize mistakes.  Since mistakes are not planned and cannot be factored into preparation, I call it luck.

    • We had Darnold in a terrible situation for Sam Darnold and the team he's QBing. Darnold is best deployed as a high level game manager. He has elite throwing skills but he's disaster waiting to happen when he has to press and a QB has to press on a bad team. Seattle is a great spot for him surrounded with great weapons with an elite defense to lean on.  Swap him and Stafford last night and the Seahawks cruise while Darnold has 3-4 turnovers having to try to play hero ball for the Rams.
    • This picture was posted by the NFL back in September and shows Darnold and Maye at the front closest to the Lombardi trophy. I personally don’t believe in the “script” theory. I do believe that the NFL will influence specific games to get a more entertaining outcome at times. However, this is gaining some steam online and even got a response from NFL PR.
    • In the last 5 years, nearly 10% of the NFL's starting QBs (19% of the NFC QBs) were / are (at some point) on the Panther's roster.  Of those QBs, their 2025 win percentage (regular season) was (combined-- the Seahawks, Bucs, and Panthers) won 30 of 51 games--nearly 60%--in 2025.  At an average of 10 wins per season, a team has a better than 90% chance of making the playoffs.  (Heck, I nearly added Caleb Williams to this forumula since we basically gave the Bears their QB as well).
