Dan Graziano: Receivers aren't the issue in Carolina

Recommended Posts

No dude, don't you know? They should have done MORE.

Seriously though, last year I asked people what else they would have done given the cap space we had to work with and the talent that was available to sign/draft, and no one could give me an alternative to what we put together. Not a single person. Just a bunch of bitching about "Gettleman sucks and should have signed/drafted someone better"...

Who, dammit, who?!?!

I've repeatedly asked that question right here in this forum.

The inevitable answer you get is that its NOT THEIR JOB to come up with the answer, but they know that the answer just HAD to be different than the answer Gettledouche came up with!

As I said earlier, Humphries was one pick ahead of us so at that point I doubt it would have cost us a lot to go get him. Of course the Cards may not have wanted to do a trade anyways.

This isn't a DG critique, it's merely answering the question of what else could he have done. Last year he said Bell was left handed, hopefully Oher doesn't turn out like Bell.

It took adding our 3rd round pick to our 2nd rounder to move up to get St. Louis's pick to take Funchess.

Moving up in the 1st round is never cheap.  Not even to move up one spot.  So I imagine it would have taken at LEAST our 3rd rounder and maybe another pick in the lower round to move up to select Humphries.

So that would have meant missing out on Funchess.

Which group do you think would have a greater impact on the performance of the Panthers in 2015?  OT D.J. Humphries/WR Tyler Lockett/RB Javorius Allen (Lockett and Allen were "available" choices at our original positions in the 2nd and 4th rounds)?  Or LB Shaq Thompson/WR Devin Funchess/OT Daryl Williams?

When it comes to quality and BPA, I know which group I'd choose.

    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
    • Canales can never get his teams ready in the first week of the season so far. Hope that changes or Ben Johnson is going to take his azz to school.
