Philadelphia Eagles vs Carolina Panthers NFL Week 1 Predictions.......

The Philadelphia Eagles will kick off the 2009 NFL regular season with a road game at the Carolina Panthers, Sunday September 13. The Eagles lead the Panthers 4-0 SU dating back to the 2004 NFL season. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Eagles as -1.5 point road favorites over the Panthers with the over/under set at 43.5 points. The Eagles success lies on the health of RB Brain Westbrook and how well QB Donovan McNabb performs. Westbrook played 14 games had nine TD’s with 936 yards rushing, while McNabb had 23 TD’s with 3,916 passing yards. He was pulled from a game against Baltimore, after struggling from Week 10 to 13, where the veteran QB threw a combined six interceptions. Backup QB Michael Vick may come in if McNabb struggles. McNabb has weapons in the wide out position as second year WR DeSean Jackson is coming off a productive year with 62 catches for 912 yards and two TD’s. The Eagles drafted offense this year and added WR Jeremy Maclin and former Pittsburgh Steelers RB LeSean McCoy to their arsenal. On defense they were hit with bad news in the off-season as longtime defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away. They were fourth against the rush and third against the pass and gave up a fourth ranked 18.1 ppg. The Eagles are 4-6 SU when playing in September and 6-3-1 when playing outside the NFC East. They went 1-3 in the pre-season.

The Panthers QB Jake Delhomme returns as starter and must avoid making mistakes. Delhomme passed for 15 TD’s with 3,288 yards passing, but had 12 interceptions. The Panthers need to have a good game from their talented duo in the backfield in RB DeAngelo Williams and RB Jonathan Stewart. These backs combined for over 2300 rushing yards and 28 TD’s in 2008. Should the Panthers talented running backs have good games against Philadelphia it will open up things for the Panthers talented receiving corps with Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammad and Dwayne Jarrett. Jake Delhomme did not look very good on offense during the preseason, going 0-4 SU, and if the Eagles can get pressure on him they could get turnovers. The Panthers success on defense rests with their front four. Julious Peppers had 14 ½ sacks in 2008 but the corps must do a better job of stopping the run. Carolina drafted two defensive linemen with their top 3 picks in this year’s draft. Their secondary may be a little suspect and they’ll have to step it up.

Recent Trends to Consider:

Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Eagles are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 vs. NFC.

Eagles are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 road games.

Panthers are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 home games.

Panthers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog.

Under is 4-0 in Eagles last 4 games in Week 1.

Under is 11-2 in Panthers last 13 games in Week 1.

We might have struggled, but its not like the Eagles doesn't have any holes either

The return of Stew made me feel better about our chances. We can run, its going to be hard for them to beat us. Plus we're at home. Eagles offense works in spurts. Hopefully our defense is ready

If can run the ball and create 3rd and shorts, pop a few big runs, hit Smith for some big passes, and keep from turning the ball over, then I think we'll win. Things usually don't work perfectly though, so one or more of these areas might faulter. I'm guessing Jake might miss a few deep passes to Smith, and may throw an INT or 2. If that happens, then I just hope McFlabb will throw a few INTs as well, and maybe we can win a close one.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
