For the true geeks... yet a few more stats re: our rushing game:

We're 5th in the "Run Efficiency Ratio" as calculated at Sporting Charts, which defines Run Efficiency as follows:

Quote

Run Efficiency Ratio compares the number of rushing yards a team generates for each rushing yard against to give an indication to how well a teams offense does at generating rushing yards compared to how that teams defense prevents rushing yards by their opponent.

More about Run Efficiency Ratio:  This ratio gives you the number of rushing yards a team generates for each rushing yard they give up. It helps to give an indication of both the teams rushing offense as well as its run defense.

Ahead of us are: Buffalo, Seattle, Minnesota, Pittsburgh.

We're currently 3rd in the league in terms of rushing big plays, and rushing big plays differential.  (We are tied for first in OVERALL big plays differential).

Seattle, Minnesota, Buffalo and Pittsburgh once again are the other top teams in this stat.

For 2014, we ranked 12th in rushing big plays, and rushing big plays differential, so there's been definite improvement in our run game.  Probably a big part of that is due to Cam's increased mobility.

I haven't done a breakdown to see which player on our team accounts for the most rushing big plays.  I *think* Stew is in the lead, but it would be interesting to look back and see which rusher has the greatest % of big rushes / rushing attempt.  Maybe I can look at that over the weekend.

Ok... lots more stats & commentary ahead.  I've got a free evening and I'm looking forward to getting caught up on all these tables.

Perhaps a stat section and some tables and commentary in the Big Ass End of the Year Coffee Table Book for all the hard work KB_fan does on these? Might be a nice addition.

Ok, here's the data on our passing game, season to date.  (click on table for larger view)

There's a bit more variation here in terms of passing attempts, completion %, passing yards per game, etc.  As should surprise no one, our opponents' passing attempts have significantly outstripped ours (7 of 9 games) and passing yards per game also signficantly favor our opponent.

YET:  We have more passing touchdowns, and dramatically higher figures for yards / attempt and yards / completion.  I think one factor for this is FIELD POSITION.  We are able to be effective in our passing game while racking up less yards because we are getting good field position on turnovers, and also increasingly through special teams.

Speaking of turnovers, our interception differential of +5 (14 interceptions made / 9 interceptions thrown) is really exciting.  Our secondary is balling out this year, and its making a HUGE difference.

We are tied for 1st in total interceptions,

and we rank 6th in terms of interception differential.

I'm really excited to see our consistently high yards/attempt figures for the past 5 games, as well as the excellent yards / completion figures for the whole season.  I'm about to go check to see where the figures below rank us in terms of the entire league, and in comparison with 2014 and 2013.  Stay tuned...

Current Passing Offense Rankings:

Passing Attempts / Game:  27th    /  2014: 19th

Completion %:  31st    /   2014:  24th

Passing Yds/Game:  28th   /  2014:  19th

Ok, the above numbers look pretty lousy.  But, as I suspected, the yards / attempt and yards/ completion rankings are EXCELLENT!

Yards per Attempt:  10th (7.0 yds/attempt)  /  2014:  23rd  (6.4 yards / attempt)

Yards per Completion:  2nd !!! (12.5 yds / completion)  [Arizona leads with 13.5 yds/completion].  In 2014 we averaged 10.7 yds/completion, for a rank of 19th.

A few more passing stats:

Passing TDs/ game:  14th

Avg, team passer rating:  18th

I started two topics earlier this evening which include current Panthers statistics & analysis.

The thread below contains a table showing all of our 2015 opponents, their 2014 records,  the Panthers' historical record against them, and the Panthers' record against each opponent since 2011 when Cam arrived.

There are 4 teams we play this year whom Cam has never beaten.  We've now beaten 3 of them.... 1 left!

The second stats thread I posted separately this evening gives a quick "At a Glance" view of all 116 Panthers drives in every game this season.

Here are a couple of notes / comments I posted by way of analysis:

So far on our 27 Touchdown Drives, comprising 192 plays, for 1755 yards, we've only faced a total of 21 3rd downs attempts!!!

A couple of notes about streaks that can be seen in the table above:

1) Most consecutive scoring drives so far this season:  3  (achieved in 4 different games:  New Orleans, Tampa, GB, Tenn)

2) Most drives without a score:  7 drives (Indianapolis)

3) Games with consecutive touchdowns:  4 (Tampa, Seattle, GB, Tenn)

4) We've scored offensive TDs in 17 of the 18 halves we've played so far (all but the 2nd half of the JAX game)

5) 1st drive of the game:  We've scored on our opening drive in 6 of 9 games this year.  4 field goals, 2 TDs.  In our other 3 opening drives, we've had  2 Three & Outs, and 1 punt after a 7 play 43 yard drive stalled.

6) Games without a turnover:  2 (New Orleans & Tenn)

7) Most turnovers:  3 (Philly & Ind)

8) Only game without a FG:  Seattle

Here are the summaries of all 116 of our drives so far:

TOTALS

611     plays

3209   net yds

190     1st dwns

115     3rd dwns

Usually Special Teams gets ignored a bit ... Panthers.com has a nice update on how the ST unit has improved under Coach DeHaven:

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/DeHavens-special-teams-delivering/932b78b1-9d2b-4bdb-ac9a-c9534872e53c

Here's an excerpt with some stats that document the improvement and some of the ways ST is making a difference in games this season:

Quote

The Panthers certainly have improved in DeHaven's first season in charge. They're an average of 13 spots higher in the NFL rankings than last season in punt and kickoff coverage, punt return average and gross and net punting. The only major category they officially haven't improved in is kickoff return, but they've only returned 10 kicks and are one of just four NFL teams to start three or fewer drives after receiving kickoffs inside the 20-yard line.

On the other hand, they're tied with Buffalo for the most opponents' drives starting inside the 20-yard line after kickoffs with 13.

Here are some additional details re: PFF grades from the Titans game

It's particularly nice to see some of PFF's signature stats on Cam's deep passing rate this year.  Wish I had a comparison with his previous seasons.  Anyone on the Huddle have that data somewhere?

http://www.catscratchreader.com/2015/11/17/9752644/panthers-27-titans-10-handing-out-the-grades

Offense:

  • Cam Newton (+6.0) earned his best grade of the year. He was particularly good on intermediate throws (between 10-19 yards) where he completed 9-10 passes for 151 yards.
  • After a slow start to the season, Devin Funchess (+1.2) performed well for the second straight week. Funchess dropped six passes over his first six games, but has not had any the last three weeks.
  • Of the 17 Panthers who saw action on offense, only three had negative grades: RT Darryl Williams (-0.1), RT Mike Remmers (-0.3), and WR Philly Brown (-0.9).
  • Ryan Kalil (+2.3) continued his stellar season; however, he allowed his second sack of the year.
  • Ed Dickson (+0.8) received his first positive grade since week 1

Surprising news that all of our DEs got negative grades:

Defense:

  • Every DE who saw action for the Panthers had a negative grade: Ryan Delaire (-0.1), Kony Ealy (-0.9), Wes Horton (-1.2), Jared Allen (-1.6), and Mario Addison (-2.1).
  • Kawann Short (+3.1), Luke Kuechly (+4.5), and Josh Norman (+2.0) all continued their elite play.
  • It was a good day for the Panthers’ safeties as all three who saw action earned positive grades: Kurt Coleman (+2.7), Roman Harper (+0.5), and Tre Boston (+0.1).
  • Although he only played 14 snaps, AJ Klein (+2.2) received his best grade on the season.
  • For the third consecutive week, Charles Tillman (+0.2) graded positively.

Special Teams:

  • Fozzy Whitaker (+1.0) did a good job on kickoff team as he made two tackles.
  • Ted Ginn (+2.5) was great returning punts.  He now has an overall grade of +5.5 as punt returner this season.

Signature Stats:

14.7% of Cam Newton’s passes have been over 20 yards, the 7th highest rate of deep passing. On his 40 deep pass attempts, he has completed 13 for 494 yards with 5 TDs and 1 int. His receivers haven’t helped him on such throws as they have dropped 5 passes, the most in the league.

While he aligns within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage on only 15.3% of snaps, Kurt Coleman has a run stop percentage of 12.9 in such situations, fifth best among all safeties.
