Would like to think Gettleman is creating a roster built for the long haul, but there is no time like the present.  Strike while the iron is hot.

This team doesn't even have Kelvin and still has some bad contracts weighing it down.

It could be argued that, with another solid draft next season and possibly getting rid of CJ's cap number, the Panthers could be a stronger team on paper next season, even though it's highly unlikely they steamroll through the regular season again. Playing the AFCS and NFCE has really helped in that regard.

Honestly, what division isn't 'down' this year?  Only 4 of the 8 divisions have 2 teams over 500, and the Bills and Jets are both 5-4 in the AFC East. Every team has plenty of opportunity to be better than they have been and Carolina is one of the very few who has actually done it.

Dilfer just said Arizona is the 2nd best team in the NFL, behind the Patriots. Remember, this is the very same team that lost to a Landry Jones-led Pittsbugh squad.

ESPN being prisoners of the moment? I'm shocked.

That loss was bad but they are much like the Pats in that it's difficult to find a weakness. They are a very well balanced team with probably the second best coach in football right now.

Carolina's strength is that they know who they are and have the personnel to overpower opponents leaning on that identity. Whether they can get away with that in the playoffs against a more tactical side like Arizona is the million dollar question.
