The Carolina Panthers cannot develop a Quarterback

The Carolina Panthers cannot develop a Quarterback

Been seeing this quite a bit on the board lately.

"Joe Flacco would have not developed because our coaches suck."

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/19844-knowing-everything-you-know-now-who-when-would-you-have-replaced-jake.html

"Why waste a draft pick when the Panthers don't have the coaching to develop a Quarter Back?

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/20227-everyone-wanting-expecting-panthers-draft-qb.html

Etc, etc.

Yet you have many of the same posters clammoring for Matt Moore who's been on the roster for 3 years to start.

Apparently we can develop Matt Moore but not a draft pick?

At some point talent makes coaches look good.

As Joe Flacco would have in 2008.

And so Mike Mccoy now the OC with the Broncos sucked. So does Rip Scherer our current QB coach.

But somehow an undrafted free agent made the Pro Bowl for the Panthers in 2005. Must have been the coaching he received when he completed 50 passes for the Saints in 5 years?

So what is it the current Panthers staff develops well?

Running backs?

Deangelo Williams is a star quality performer that waited 2 years to get the starting nod for the Panthers.

Talent always makes coaching look good.

Having missed Joe Flacco in 2007, do what's necessary to bring QB talent to the Panthers in 2010.

Matt Moore has not been developed into a starter quality QB, otherwise he would have at least been #2 on the depth chart. He doesn't look like he's made any significant strides since coming to the Panthers.

Jake had his best years shortly after joining the team, he was really developed in NFL Europe (along with a guy named Kurt Warner). His pro bowl was for the 2004 season and it's all been downhill since then.

Really every QB we bring in either stays the same or gets worse. No this franchise can't develop QB to save their lives (or possibly jobs).

you know if we had a 2000+ yard power running game, like the 2000 Ravens, and a defense that was one of the stingiest defenses in points allowed of it's time, like the 2000 Ravens, we could be looking at a superbowl contender here.

I mean pretty much everything else would have to be that close to perfect to get to the superbowl with the QB position the way it is here and now. I don't know, I guess it must be easier to do that than draft a QB and develop.

Yep.

Trent Dilfer was awesome

But with a weaker running game than ours the Ravens won 2 playoff games last year against the Dolphins and Titans. ;)

But Flacco would have failed here.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
