RALEIGH, NC  Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed goaltender Cam Ward to a two-year contract extension. The deal will pay Ward $3.5 million in the 2016-17 season and $3.1 million in 2017-18.

“Cam has been a major face of the Hurricanes both on the ice and in our community for more than a decade,” said Francis. “We are happy he has chosen to continue his career in Carolina.”

Ward, 32, finished the 2015-16 season with a 23-17-10 record, a 2.41 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in 52 games played. His 2.41 goals-against average was his second-best single-season mark of his career, and his wins and games played totals were his best since 2011-12. After missing time due to injury in December, Ward returned to the net on Dec. 18, and, from then until the end of the season, posted an NHL seventh-best 2.19 goals-against average, while compiling a 14-9-7 record and .919 save percentage in 30 games played.

Drafted by the Hurricanes in the first round, 25th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Ward is the Carolina franchise’s all-time leader in wins (269), shutouts (23) and games played by a goaltender (564). He ranks sixth among active NHL goaltenders and 43rd in league history in wins, and is fifth among active goaltenders in games played. Ward’s 269 wins with the Hurricanes ranks third among active goaltenders with one team, and 17th in league history with one team. In 2006, Ward (6’1”, 185 lbs.) backstopped Carolina to the Stanley Cup championship and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the Stanley Cup playoffs

I want Stamkos.

Looks like a bridge contract until Alex Nedeljkovic can take over the reigns. A little hefty of a bridge contract I might add, I was hoping for at worst and avg. of $2.5M.

A bridge contract eliminates Reimer and Fleury because Reimer will want a long term deal and even though MAF may come somewhat cheap on the trade market, he still has 3 years left on his contract.

I would have liked to try and workout a trade for Frederik Andersen and have had him play his final year of his ELC as a Cane. If he performed well enough, reward him with a new contract and cut the ties with Lack when Ned is ready in a couple years (2018).

Hopefully Cam can peace together a decent enough season to help us get to the playoffs. We need the Cam Ward from the last half of the season for a full season to have a chance.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
