As for Smitty being imperfect, to put it nicely, he was still arguably the best player in franchise history, and as such he deserved a meeting before being axed. 

I'm sorry but you couldn't be more wrong about JR. He made Hurney offer Peppers the franchise tag. He went above John Fox's head and called Julius Peppers a leader and a captain when he was not comfortable with that. He handcuffed Hurney and Fox and did not allow them to spend money making Fox a lame duck head coach. He has absolutely intervined in the past.
