MMQB All-time draft - 3 current Panthers make "top 300 players"* of all time

A punter was drafted #4 overall in this exercise. That alone makes it utterly invalid.

Agree it's strange.  But I imagine there was some competition to be "cool" and pick someone unexpected - an historical "great" - early.

Peter King especially mentioned the "honor history" angle of this exercise:

Quote

I was determined to honor history with my picks ... and I fear I fell short. My team probably has more players from the 21st century than any other team. But I picked from the meat of the curve. I wanted Anthony Muñoz, the best tackle ever, or Hutson with my first-round pick. With both gone, I took Tom Brady; as my buddy and fellow GM Rick Gosselin said, that’s some consolation prize. I honored the past with my next two picks, an electric back, Gale Sayers, and the best pass defender in the NFL’s first 50 years, Night Train Lane.

I mean some of the analysts waited until round 10 to pick their QB (Marino & Favre both went in round 10).  When you know that only 12 QBs can be picked in the entire draft, it changes the rules a little bit.

Yeah I don't really understand this list at all.

Sorry, I did a terrible job initially of explaining how this worked.  I've now edited the OP to explain the rules of the exercise.  12 analysts went through a 25 round draft to pick a roster of 25 players from the pool of all NFL players ever, past & present.  Could only draft 1 QB per each of the 12 "teams," including 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs etc.  Had to pick specialists also among the 25 picks per analyst.

Ah....ok that makes way more sense.

Reading the article would have helped. I basically skimmed it looking for Panthers players.

* IMPORTANT NOTE:  This is not "top 300 players" irregardless of position.  12 analysts went through 25 rounds of a mock draft to compile 12 rosters of 25 players from the pool of all NFL players throughout history.  Thus they could only draft 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs ... EACH.

As a fun break from all the DG vs. Hurney angst...

I spent some time browsing the MMQB's all-time draft.  Fun stuff.  (Apologies if it's already been posted... I did a search and did see it.)

https://si.com/specials/mmqb-nfl-all-time-draft/draft-results.html

Reggie White (who was only with the Panthers one season, so doesn't really count as a Panther so much) is the highest Panthers pick - in the top 10.

3 current Panthers players make the list!  I'll let you all click on the link to discover who.  (Luke is obvious... 2 & 3 a bit less so.)

I was surprised how high Luke went.  Above a bunch of HoF guys, including Kevin Greene.  WAY above Urlacher too.

Thanks for making my thread again.

So sorry, I was offlline much of Tuesday, and obviously DG's firing overshadowed most everything else early in the week, so I missed it.

I *DID* search, but used MMQB all-time draft in the search and so it didn't show up.  And note, I *DID* apologize in case it had already been posted as I knew it wasn't something brand new.
