Fox, Peppers, and the "Jake" problem.

Alright, what better way to start on a football forum than discussing who we need to cut, and keep.

What do you guys think about Fox? Personally I think he's too timid and doesn't have enough confidence in his own players. I hope he'll be gone after this year. As for peppers, if he gets at a minimum, 15 sacks this season there's no doubt he'll stay. Now for the real problem that bringing this team down, Jake Delhomme. I'm sure most, if not all of you saw that pathetic final drive today. (By Jake anyway.) and our passing TD-INT ratio this year is just gut-wrenching.

Anyway, that's my 0.02, anyone else care to give some input?

I have mixed feelings about Fox. I like alot of things he does but he gets way too stubborn some times. But it looks like he's got the defense running well.

As for Peppers if he can keep playing like he has the past 2 weeks I'd love to give him a new contract. He looks like he's in the game now.

And as for Jake. I like Jake, in fact alot of people like Jake. He's a leader and he's unselfish. But that does not make you a starting QB. I honestly think that Matt Moore couldn't do any worse than Jake at this point. I'm tired of the crap. I'm tired of the mediocre play and the "comeback" performances. Why win like that when you don't have to? OH hey but HES GOT GRIT!!! Yea sure he does but he also has tunnel vision and can't protect the football.

I think he has been playing better in recent weeks(except for today) but this team needs a good QB it is painfully obvious. You can say some of those pics weren't his fault but come on he's had at least 1-2 pics a game. You can't pin all of that on the line or the WRs or the coaching.

We have to start running more 3 WR sets. Again I hope that we get Mike Goodson involved some time.

I hate the fact that for 5 years running we can't manage to get a legit #2 threat. It has been so damn obvious. You can't sit there and tell me we draft that bad because we don't. There is a serious lack of faith in the young blood on this team. And a good QB will make those WR's look good.

And the thing is, is that we don't even have to have a legit #2 we could just use the guys we have and be successful. Barnidge, Rosario, Moore, Dwayne Jarrett, Mike Goodson... show some versatility and these guys can easily get it done. But what do we do? We run 2 WR most of the game. I know the running game is our bread and butter we could seriously do so much better.

This is probably the single most intelligent thing I've heard in the past week. Kudos to you. And I definitely agree with the last part, we definitely have some weapons on offense, but it seems like Jake is too scared to make a throw unless the receiver is wide open with no one around him. And I'm not going to argue, we're a running team. (That was obviously displayed on the last drive by the Panthers today.) But we also have some pretty good receivers too, and if Jake and the WR's would just get their head in the game we might be able to turn this season around. Yeah, right.

Fox is most likely gone, if we win more than 6 games it would be a miracle and I think management's patience has to be wearing out at this point.

Peppers I would be glad to have come back, if it is at a reasonable price. In the scenario were we are have to franchise him again(which would reportedly cost in excess of $20 million) then I think the Pepper era just needs to be over. If the new coaching staff is somehow able to convince him to stay, then fine as well.

Jake is done, regardless of any other situations. Here is why I think this is the case, at this point Hurney/Fox decided to give him a tremendous amount of guaranteed money AFTER one of the worst performances by a QB in playoff history. If by some horrible turn Fox is NOT gone after this season, then Jake will most likely still be ushered towards the door because both Fox and Hurney have to realize that the heat is moving towards surface-of-the-sun levels. I sincerely doubt they want their respective futures to rest on Jake's shoulders.

In the case that the new staff is brought in, I doubt we could find someone stupid enough to keep Delhomme around.

In regards to the earlier post about our "talent" that we have for that #3 spot. Notice that all our previous attempts to fill that #2 and #3 spot are buried in a depth chart somewhere or no longer in the league. I'm not saying we might not have a capable player but considering how are past entries did when they finally got the boot, I have some serious doubts that these guys are worth a damn as a #2 or #3 receiving threat. Not to mention, why would it matter who we fielded there with Delhomme at QB? That is an automatic recipe for failure.

And, to that point, why in the HELL do you want to see a 3 or 4 WR set? Seriously? Have you not seen this QB play yet? Taking the ball completely out of his hands and running, running, and running some more is going to be the only way we MIGHT stay competitive this year. Never in my life have I wanted us to be a one-trick pony until now....

    • The thing I hate about strength of schedule is that NFL teams change so much over a year and past success or failure doesn't really dictate future success or failure
    • Considering you previously struggled to understand BTT despite it being explained in a video, write-up, and multiple replies, I get why this might be a little too complex for you. Happy to clarify again! Just let me know which part tripped you up this time. 😉
    • And, honestly, there's only so much you can attempt to do in the draft. And every draft pick is a roll of the dice. But that's where grabbing a ton of UDFAs, and targeting the best, makes a big difference. Sure, their individual chances of getting a hit here is less, but that shotgun pattern might just hit something.  Right now, we need bulk, partly to rebuild and partly to dilute the deep level of stank that has developed on this team in the last six years. If we're going to rebuild a culture built around culture, accountability and winning, then these UDFAs we bring in each season have to be the wash water that gets out that leftover dirt.  Canales seems to be a smart, culture-first, build up the good ones kind of guy. I like that and I hope he can keep it going here. But he was working against a locker room that had been taught to lose and taught to distrust or ignore coaches. He's got his work cut out for him, still. He does seem to have it moving in the right direction and that's something I was pretty amazed with by the end of last season.
