Gotta say it. I've never been much of a hockey fan but have decided to watch this year. Sure I watched when Messier won his cup and have watched ovechkin a few times, Crosby, Lemiux etc...but

as for staying in touch with the sport and keeping up with games and the such, this is my first year.

the friggin Penguins look unstoppable thru their first 10 games. Thoughts?

The Penguins are ridiculous this year. They are bordering on a dynasty. They just lost Gonchar (not sure for how long) which should help opponents. But I honestly don't see anyone challenging them for the best record in the east. The playoffs are a different story though. I think a team could beat them in the playoffs, but I wouldn't bet on that.

That's kinda what i was thinking. Losing Gonchar will be easier to deal with I think since they got that one dude. Skoula or something like that.

At least that's what I read somewhere.

I watch them and I'll watch other games with different teams and it's no contest. The speed of their game, their defense, everything it seems is untouchable.

They just make everything seem like clockwork. Every time they step onto the ice, they know they are the better team. And they know that their game plan will work for them. They can skate, score, and pass with any team in the NHL at any time. They are scary good.

man I lived there for several years and I can't think of a better team to pull for. Ownership, fans are hardcore like Steelers fans, great venue (even though it's as old as the Independence Arena) go to Pittsburgh for a game and the atmosphere is incredible...I miss it.

Sucks for the Jackets.. I saw that goal.

The Penguins are definitely a great team that's on fire right now. It's amazing how injuries to Malkin and Gonchar, among others, haven't slowed them down one bit.

I'll tell you the major difference maker though, imo. Crosby switched to that single piece composite stick that's better for shooting and is putting the puck on net more instead of looking for the pass 100% of the time. He really challenging Ovechkin for that "greatest offensive player in the game today" title.

People like to argue that Malkin has the better offensive skillset. I'm no Crosby fan. In fact, I really don't like him much at all. But, as a player, he's great in his own end, can win draws, amazing passer, and now shooter? Jeeez louise watch out NHL.

Also Marc-Andre Fluery is FINALLY stepping it up and being the goaltender he was drafted to be. Not that he's been awful but he's really living up to his #1 pedigree now and they look borderline unbeatable.

It's still early but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Penguins repeat. The West has a lot of iffy teams that have holes (Detroit's injuries, Chicago's goaltending, etc) and the Sharks (the most talented roster on paper in the NHL IMO) always choke in the playoffs.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
