Where, O Where has our defense gone?

I was going to call in to the Panthers post game show on the radio and ask this but too bummed to make the call.

This year is the first time I have heard the term "bend dont break" defensive system when talking about Carolina's defense. This leads me to believe that this is something that we just started this year. Is this a new system or has it been around for a while?

If it is something new, then its not working. I can't stand seeing the defense struggle like it has the past month and a half. Granted I love the way our offense is finally clicking and putting points up on the board, Id rather see our denfense click than our offense.

It seems we allow too many yards in the flats. and too many short passes. Yes, for the MOST part, we are stopping the big play but allowing teams to methodically move down the field. A lot of times thats more crushing to a defense than the big play. I miss the old Carolina defense, and would have it anyday over this "bend dont break" defensive system.

Also, has anyone noticed how open receivers seem to get in the endzone against our defense? Its like theres a lot of confusion with the defense in the goal to go situations.

Need I say this as well, we need to BLITZ!!! We really had some successful blitzes last night again NY and it caused Manning to make poor throws. Why not blitz more? Seems we are playing too much zone, and QBs with time are tearing us to shreds.

Note to John Fox:

I want the old Carolina defense back!!!!!

What is everyone else take on this topic? We did very well on defense before the bye week and have went south shortly after that.

Our defensive coordinator is not great, but he is decent.

But we have been struggling on defense since the Detroit game. In truth our run defense has not been great all year. I don't know whats wrong, but I don't think its the philosphy. We have the same philosphy we did last year, but we are allowing more ypc (3.8 vs 4.4 this year). I suspect that its problems up the middle. We lost Jenkins, so our tackles aren't as good as they were last year. Beason is talented, but still learning. And Godfrey is a rookie.

And with Kemo and Lewis both out, we got bashed badly last night.

These are not excuses, but they are reasons.

    • Yeah I think he's just talking continuity it's not really an endorsement. Also I would think CarolinaHuddle of all places would understand using "we" for the team you follow. I can't STAND when dorks do the "Oh so you play for them then? Hurr hurr"
    • Kon is a damn stud but it’s not any individual player’s team. All of the “big 3” are incredibly and equally important IMO. And LaMelo makes Kon way better (look at his shooting splits with LaMelo on the floor vs without. Also Moose and even Miles are important cogs. Honestly think we’re 1 piece away from being legit top contenders if the young guys continue to develop the next year or two. I trust this FO to be patient to find that piece within the next 2-3 years and not force anything. Plenty of time and even without adding anyone we have the pieces in place overall already to compete with any team.
    • We lost 2 very close and winnable games against top teams in the league while missing 3 critical players despite 2 of our top 3 players shooting unusually terribly. Still split the 4 games that Moose and Miles were suspended, winning the most important one vs the Hawks. This ain’t yo mama’s Hornets man. Hopefully Coby can go soon but even if not Moose and Miles are huge additions for our starting lineup and bench rotations. Schedule is pretty tough after these next 4 but I think we’ll take care of business the next 4 to get to .500 then finish slightly above .500 after that to get a 7 or 8 seed. Keep it rolling boys. Also Kon is having an insanely historic rookie season as a shooter. Like truly can’t believe my eyes watching this kid level of historic. Man what a fuging home run of a draft pick and exactly what this team needed to take that next step forward. He’s gonna shatter the rookie 3 point and franchise 3 point records. Has a real chance to be the 2nd best 3 point shooter ever or dare I say even get to Curry’s level (as a pure shooter, Curry obviously has way more to his game that has made him a GOAT).
