Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at age 56. 

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” O’Connor’s family said in a statement to The Irish Times and the BBC. A cause of death was not given.

O’Connor, who courted controversy throughout her long career, rose to fame with her 1990 rendition of the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. 

Her 17-year-old son, Shane O’Connor, died of an apparent suicide last year. She announced his passing in January 2022.

Probably one of the more misunderstood artists. She took a lot of heat in this country following her Saturday Night Live appearance when she tore up a picture of the Pope in protest over the Catholic Church sexual abuse cover ups. Her stance on this was a good ten years before it became a news-worthy topic in this country.

Sinead O'Connor posted about her son Shane's death in the days leading up to her own.

O'Connor recently took to Twitter, where she reflected on her 17-year-old son's suicide, writing that she's been "lost" since his untimely death. Shane died in January 2022 after going missing in Ireland.

"Been living as undead night creature since.. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul," O'Connor wrote of Shane. "We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

Can't imagine having to deal with the death and suicide of a child.
