Here's an incredible John Fox stat

His all-time coaching record is 70-57. Pretty good huh?

However, people have been saying that Fox pads his wins once his teams have been eliminated from the playoffs so his seasons don't look so bad. So I went back and determined the exact week the Panthers from eliminated from the playoffs in '02, '04, '06, '07, and '09 to compare Fox's record when he's still alive for a playoff berth compared to when he's been eliminated. Here's what I found out.

2002

Before elimination: 5-9

After elimination: 2-0

2003

Alive the whole way: 11-5

2004

Alive the whole way: 7-9

2005

Alive the whole way: 11-5

2006

Before elimination: 6-8

After elimination: 2-0

2007

Before elimination: 6-9

After elimination: 1-0

2008

Alive the whole way: 12-4

2009

Before elimination: 5-8

After elimination: 2-0

Total

Before elimination: 63-57

After elimination: 7-0

So our bad non-playoff teams have actually gone 7-0 after they've been eliminated since Fox has been here and have a great chance at going 8-0 next week.

So Fox's mediocrity is easy to see PRE-elimination: His regular season winning percentage is only 52.5% pre-elimination.

However, once his teams are eliminated, his winning percentage shoots up to ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. There is nobody I'd want more than John Fox at coaching my team in meaningless games.

Let there be no doubt: John Fox is an absolutely average coach in every way that is a MASTER at getting his guys to play hard in games that are glorified preseason games.

very very good post. I equate what you guys are doing now to playing your last two holes in golf really really good and giving optimism even though the first 16 holes sucked. Unfortunately, all 18 holes count.

Pads his stats??? Are you expecting him to lose games just to spite the team? What a bunch of paranoid nonsense.

Call it whatever you want. He only turns it on when it doesn't matter. Take a look at the difference in the playcalling this season since we've been eliminated. The conservative play is gone and we've looked like world-beaters. If we were still in the playoff hunt though, would Fox be letting Davidson open up the playbook? No chance in hell.

My answer was "toungue in cheek" (don't know what that means? Google it). but I have noticed over the years that when we are out of it we seem to play the spoiler role very well.

^^ Yeah, I'm sure Fox tries to lose on purpose and then mysteriously attempts to win later on in the season. He must be getting paid off by Falcons and Bucs fans.

No its just that hes so conservative before being eliminated, but after being eliminated he loosens up the play book and game plan.

Its fine to think that, but this thread just looks like people are questioning his effort and commitment rather than his abilities as a coach. Thats just asinine whining.

    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
