Playcalling

Sorry to come right back but if Fox and Davidson keep up what they're doing somebody will hand us our butts like the Giants did. It's pedal to the metal the rest of the way for 4 quarters or another year goes by. I'm tired of the next year syndrome.

Handed our butts to us? We lost in overtime on the homefield of the defending champ. That is not getting your butt handed to you. This was a game in which our quarterback said he was hesitant to throw it deep in the second half because of the wind/weather (the Giants didn't throw it deep either). Only two games all year did we get our buts handed to us (at Tampa and Atlanta).

There are certain things you just do in football. One of them is that if you are a running team and you get up by a significant amount, you run the ball. Coaches that don't do that don't stick around long. Thats the way it is and the way it always has been.

There have been defensive lapses for sure but I don't think the offense was passive in the New Orleans game. We moved the ball throughout and only had one 3 and out in the game. Unfortunately, it was sandwiched between 2 NO touchdowns. Otherwise we continued to throw the ball when in decent field position and run effectively. We really did not have good field position the last 20 minutes. And Brees got in a rhythm as our defensive line tired being short handed and inexperienced. Truth is I was glad NO scored to get ahead since we had 3 minutes left. I knew Jake would give Kasay a chance and after the earlier miss he would come back and be good from 60.

I really like Davidson's playcalling lately. We have even run a few reverses and some trick plays. Shows they are loose at the same time they are focused. Jake and Smith have a chemistry like we saw in 2003. Only this time we expect Smith to make the specular catch instead of looking it at it a last gasp effort. I could see Jake lofting a few more passes his way in the coming weeks. Smitty is unstoppable when he is fully focused and determined. All Davidson needs to do is set Jake up to make plays and read the defense, and audibilize when needed. In the shot gun or 2 minute offense Jake is one of the best. We need to do the hurry up and shot gun more to highlight Jake's talent. Interestingly we can run out of that formation as well.

There shouldn't have been an overtime in the Giants game. You're right the Giant's didn't throw it deep but they sure whacked us with the short ones. We didn't do too good with those or running on a tightened up 7 man line either.

I don't want a Coach that isn't winning to stick around. Blowing three possession leads is not acceptable and neither is having a team like we have and pulling it out time after time at the last minute.

All this may be moot anyway. Fox is probably going to stay no matter what happens from here on out and if he wins the big one I have what I wanted all these years and I don't care what happens with him.

    • No you dont.  He had all those records for years before his final season. Whether career or season he had them all years before his final season in which he played 6 games.
    • Williams covered for Moore by saying they were on the wrong page about Moores specific route. Williams could have easily covered for him by saying he messed up. Suggesting only 1 route was ever intended to be a viable target is absurd.
    • I am going to agree with Linville this time--I think we need to get a veteran edge (We have Jones II, Scourton, and Princely--2 developmental guys and a decent veteran).  We don't really think of Jones because he had a hamstring injury weeks 3 and 4 and a back that required surgery Week 6-17.  He still managed 10 pressures, and he will be 28.  Princely Umanmielen only played in approximately 18-20% of the snaps and he struggled at times.  Basically, he was a situational pass rusher.  He got 1.5 sacks and 10 pressures.  He should improve, but for now, he is what he is.  Scourton gives us hope.  For a rookie (and thanks to Jones II's injuries, he was given more PT), he had 8 sacks--and held the edge.  He played at a first-round draft pick level.  He has the potential to become "that guy" in 2026. We lose Wonnum, who played nearly 700 snaps and amassed 3 whole sacks.  For a person raised a Gamecock, I would not be upset if we purged our roster of all South Carolina alumni.   However, I see it this way:  Wonnum was decent holding the edge, something Patrick Jones II and Scourton have demonstrated at a high level.  He is a liability, if you ask me.    Jones had 7 sacks one season in Minnesota and is known for his inside rushing ability--not what you would call a speed rusher.  I think Princely was a bit disappointing, but he was a bit raw.  Out of college, they described him as being a bit predictable.  I see no reason he will not improve in 2026 and become a situational pass rusher.   Basically, with Scourton and Princely expected to continue to develop and Jones II returning from injury, I think we need another veteran (if we can get a good one) to give us balance and depth.  A third developmental player is not ideal.   Draft:  OT, LB, WR, OL depth, S. Free Agency:  Edge, possibly a WR;  re-sign Mays, Cuhran, BC (??), and Nijman.  Let walk:  Wonnum, Scott, Dowdle.  I see about $20m per year after signing the OL depth.  Spend it on a veteran edge.   Players like Reddick (Tampa), Bosa (Buffalo), Khalil Mack (LAC) could be available on a one or two year deal in the $15m range.  We could splurge here, but I think a veteran situational pass rusher (depending on Jones II's back) is all we need while our 2 young guns develop.
