A hilarious lesson about DRM in PC games (RE: Ubisuck)

So, for those of you who haven't been keeping up, Ubisoft revealed earlier this year that they would be implementing a new form of DRM to protect their PC game releases:

The gist of how it's setup to work is you have to be online all the time when playing the game in single-player mode. Games are stored on Ubisoft's servers, and if your internet disconnects, you start over at the previous checkpoint.

Needless to say, the reaction to this catastrophically idiotic plan was almost wholly negative. Google "Ubisoft DRM" and you will find a whole host of articles criticizing Ubisoft's new system, and other articles with dozens of comments from agitated nerds vowing never to buy a game with this kind of protection.

Ubisoft pinned their hopes and dreams on this new protection method. They counted on it being very difficult, if not impossible, to crack.

Unfortunately, Silent Hunter V, a PC exclusive, was the first game to use this protection. It was released on March 2nd. One day later, Ubisoft's "uncrackable" drm was cracked.

The Russians (gotta love em) also got their hands on Assassin's Creed II and kinda sorta have it cracked

Ubisoft has since responded by saying that the versions floating around on warez sites are not "full games", being purposefully vague as to what makes them incomplete, as they are likely lying as illustrated by this article.

For the record, this isn't a pro-piracy thread as much as it is an anti-DRM thread.

Oh and Ubisoft; go eat a dick.

It seems I may have spoken somewhat too soon. There are either triggers that prevent you progressing the game without a valid copy. Or it may be possible that you have to connect to Ubisoft's servers to download updated scripts to advance the campaign for Silent Hunter V.

Will keep you posted.

    • Wanting that type of play and being okay with paying $55 million a season for it are two entirely different things. If Bryce were to become the same player Purdy has been, then he would surpass my expectations of him and I'd be okay with him as our QB of the future (and again, I've long been one of the bigger anti Bryce people here who doesn't think he is capable of being our long term solution). But in no world would I be okay with paying him THAT kind of money, paying an average starter elite money is just a terrible decision.
    • I don't think they can overcome that mistake. Hell Lance was a hiccup compared to this. He isn't going to be able to carry that price tag and now he is going to have to do just that. Lol. The NFL is so dumb sometimes.
    • So, one could say that T-Mac is quicker than someone of his size should be and while he might not be quite as fast as Evans in the 40, he's more athletic than Evans. If only someone, anyone, could have seen that in his tape and mentioned that on here, hmmmmmmm In all seriousness, hearing he tested in the 89th percentile in that drill at his size is crazy impressive.  Just tried to look up the times of the top WRs in the league right now, most don't show at time for that, but I did see Chase ran his in 7 seconds flat. I honestly don't know how true this is, but I do remember seeing one breakdown of his tape and the person said he has quiet and efficient feet.  That he's really good at using the minimal steps possible to make his cuts and because of that, it actually makes him look slower to the human eye because you don't see all the quick chop steps that the guys like Tyreek would use in their running. I'm still in a state of disbelief that he's a Panther and it might not fully hit me until week 1 and I see him out there making plays for us, still feels like Goodell is going to just be like, "YOU GOT PUNKED!!!  hahaha, he's a Cowboy now, suck it"
