The Panthers cut quarterback Jake Delhomme, despite owing him $12.7 million in guaranteed money in 2010.

Thanks to Browns owner Randy Lerner, Carolina owner Jerry Richardson suddenly owes Delhomme a lot less.

Per multiple reports, Cleveland will pay Delhomme $7 million in 2010, the first year of his brand-new contract.

It doesn't necessarily mean that Delhomme will get only $5.7 million from the Panthers this year. Given that signing bonuses apply evenly to the various years of a contract (even without a salary cap in place), the Panthers might only get credit for the portion of the signing bonus that applies to the 2010 season. (Delhomme reportedly has signed a two-year deal.)

Either way, Carolina's debt to Delhomme undoubtedly has been reduced by more than a few bucks. We'll try to get the info necessary to figure out the specific numbers.

Meanwhile, the investment in Delhomme means that he'll have more than a leg up in the competition with Seneca Wallace to be the starter, even though Wallace recently said thinks he'll be the starter.

...

We're researching the Delhomme contracts. If there's no offset language in his Carolina deal, Marty Hurney should be shot. Then fired..

Nothing should be a surprise to anyone after the post 2008 dealings with Peppers. An entire team on a stranglehold by a FT nightmare. We'll see.

If Jake is truly getting paid nearly $20 million this season, that would make him THE HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE NFL.

    • Not just Dalton.   But the only real young arm they would let be seen the past 2 years was a really a bad Jack Plummer.  Who was super weak even for that tier  Can’t convince me how weak they made the atmosphere around Young hasn’t been intentional.
    • Things of note: mentions he has six drops. Six. For all the people that don’t know what a drop is, he has six. That’s a long distance from the league leader at ten. (To be fair, pro football reference has him at seven, still not bad.  Plenty of others is that same range.  His drop % is 6.3, which is low.) Catchable ball success ratio: 83% which is great. Catchable being the key word.  Mentions his contested catch rate is low at 5/18 but that’ll get better I think when he can rely on muscle memory for routes, catches, etc and the game slows down for him
    • I'd honestly take The Golden Calf of Bristol over Young. You know you can design an O around his skillset to win you games. Plus, as a bonus, said O would wear him down within 3 years so you could move on from him.
