Yasinskas thinks one "starter" needed at DT

well...actually connor has played OLB. he started every game his junior year at OLB. he played it filling in for diggs last year and did well.

but i agree....there is a danger in focusing in on only one position. you miss can miss out on someone special and you can overreach for a player who will only disappoint.

being narrow minded is rarely a good thing.

Didnt know that Connor played OLB his junior year. I stand corrected. I think the knock on him coming out of college was he didnt have the speed to play outside. He did ok when Diggs was out. Im alright with him as a starter but if a true SLB became available I would have no problem with the panthers taking him either wether its in the second round or wherever

My point about Anderson was that he had pretty much been a bust until they played him at WLB last year. He is clearly a true WLB and should remain there as TDs top backup.

I HOPE the BPA in the 2nd is a receiver. But I certainly dont want the panthers to reach for one out of need like Mickey here does. Hurney admitted himself after the 2005 draft that they might have reached for certain players in the past instead of sticking to their board. Since they corrected that mistake they have been very successful with the draft. Like I said, they are not going to fill every hole in this draft. May as well pick the BPA this year and fill in the rest next year.

I insist that defensive lineman will be going fast. Our best option to get a "true starter" will be trading up. If we are looking for a Nose Tackle we will have lots of competition with Buffalo, KC, San Diego, Miami and Denver all eying the prize. If we want a under tackle that we can bring in to compete with Johnson and Irvin if we stay put Tyson Alualu and Lamar Houston are likely the class where we will be picking. Here once again is my breakdown of the way i see the DT's falling.

1. SUH

2. MCCOY

3. WILLIAMS

4. PRICE

5. ODRICK - by the Saints or Colts

6. THOMAS

7. CODY

8. Right here is where we would be. We would have Geno Atkins, Tyson, Lamar, Linval Joseph and Torrell Troup to choose from. Not to shabby but only Tyson and Lamar are actual 2nd round prospects. The others are reaches.

What is confusing me is MUST have WR in the second, when the depth is there in rounds two AND three. There is NOT a huge difference in these guys. The pickings are slim on a starting DT after the second round. Apparently Mick Eye is a huge draft buff and these folks tend to be adament about what they read is the gospel. I read draft sites, but I don't emerse myself into them. It's not as fun when we don't have a first round pick, because honestly, it's a real crap shoot after that in terms of actaully getting a selection right.

What is confusing me is because Mick Eye disagrees with the notion that a starter is needed at DT, he pushes it back to the third when by any assessments, the cream of the crop is completely gone. I at least agreed that WR is a need, but not the greatest need at our second round selection, IMO.

And of little faith, yeah, this team will have it's struggles and IS in rebuilding-lite mode. The one thing that will help this team is the schedule. If we had a redo of last year's schedule, we'd do no better.

The reason i have the must have WR philosophy is that first and foremost i disagree that a STARTING DT is a need. I do check out a lot of draft guides and such but do not take it as gospel. I do not push DT to the third i do not have us drafting one at all. I have DE as a more important need. But not a starter more a project like Austen Lane, CJ Wilson, Brandon Lang or Clifton Geathers to rotate in. I see a big difference between the WR's available at mid 2nd and mid 3rd. With guys that would have been mid round steals like Andre Roberts, Jacoby Ford, Carlton Mitchell no longer secrets the pickings will be much slimmer than folks think.

the key is to get the best available talent at a position that we need more depth, competition, or upgrading without reaching. that covers a few positions.

i just don't want to see us go in with "WE'RE PICKING A WR" tattooed on fox/hurney's foreheads or with a one track mind that the first thing that they are going to do is draft a WR come hell or high water. you risk having someone else with a need at WR jumping ahead of you since they KNOW you are going to be going that way and you also risk missing out on incredible talent at some position that you were just okay at.

teams that go in with only one position in mind or one plan that can't be deviated from usually end up regretting it at some point.

Look i am not a scout of have any connection to the Panther's other than being a fan. That means i have a ideal of what i would like seen done. The fact is the Panthers draft strategy is always extremely unpredictable and at the same time always seems to work out. I don't think i am saying just a WR. It may sound like that but i am sure the FO is not putting all the eggs in one basket.

not sure anyone was confusing you with being connected to the panthers.

you have been more than adamant that there is no better direction than WR and that those who think there is one is hard headed. you're entitled to your opinion just like everyone is entitled to debate it with theirs. you're also entitled to soften yours like you apparently just did.

none of it really matters, though. it ain't us making the decisions (fortunately).

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
