Window of opportunity opens to strike a new CBA??

It widely has been presumed that, once the uncapped year started on March 5, there's no way a new labor agreement would be negotiated before 2011. Generally, we agree.

But there's talk -- limited, for now -- that a window of opportunity currently exists for getting a new deal done. Why? Because a new deal would entail a rookie wage scale, which would limit dramatically the money that otherwise will be pocketed under rookie deals paid out to the likes of Sam Bradford and Ndamukong Suh.

The incoming rookies likely would regard the change as unfair. But the incoming rookies don't have a vote.

Of course, it could get even more interesting if the deal gets done -- and if the rookie pay rules change -- after the players have been drafted. In that case, the outcome could seem even less fair.

Still, there are many issues to be resolved and the owners, in our view, simply aren't likely to abandon the leverage they've carefully cultivated over the past couple of years. The owners, we believe, intend to fully exert that leverage, culminating in the unilateral imposition of the last, best offer made before the current deal expires -- and then possibility the negotiation of a new CBA on the eve of the 2011 regular season.

That said, we'd welcome the negotiation of a new deal before April 22. Of course, before that can happen, the two sides would have to have, you know, a meeting.

Finally, if there were a new deal by the start of the draft, the financial rules (including, presumably, a salary cap) likely would apply next year. The rookie wage scale would apply right now.

Florio mentioned that its still a small possibility. but small is better than zero

I also highly doubt it.... The owners are prepared, I doubt they would give up their leverage for rookie pay this year... it's something they can achieve in future seasons... also it would only be a few teams at the top of the draft affected by the rookie contracts this season. The $$$ saved from a rookie pa scale this year is nowhere close to the amount of $$$ they are looking to save in the new CBA agreement.

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
