So where would you put Steve Smith on your top ten list of receivers?

Recommended Posts

If he's top 10 right now, he's 8-10. I'd probably put him somewhere between 12-15.

He's really tough and he's awesome, but right now there's just no way he's top 5 in the league. Absolutely no way. Not at this point in his career. In his prime he was top 5 at the time. But not anymore.

Not in the top 5? lol. 2008 he had over 1,400 yards with only 78 receptions. Last year, he had almost 1000 yards before breaking his arm. Also with Delhomme being next to JaMarcus Russell in QB rating in 09.

With what he still brings to the game, being doubled covered most of the time and with Jake Delhomme most of his career... how is he not in the top 5???

Guys, you can't use "look at who his QB was!" as an excuse. There are tons of receivers out there who are underappreciated because they don't have HOF QB's throwing to them, but that's no excuse; sometimes people are just lucky.

Name one, wide out that was amazing with a quarterback that led the NFL in interceptions until he either got injured or faked an injury.

Great, you missed my point completely. There probably is none, which was my point.

Here, try this:

If Smith never gets an exceptional QB throwing to him then too bad, he won't be listed as one of the greats. There will be no "well, look at his QB!" excuse to get him into the elite.

I see alot of arguments that Smith would be top 5 or whatever if he played with Brees or Manning or whatever.

Your saying that Steve Smith is a top 5 WR with Brees. So essentially your saying that Smith is a top WR. You can't just look at the stats and say whos the best, you have to see the highlight reels, the playing style, the skill, the talent and circumstances that the player is in. You have to look at all of those aspects to judge these guys.

And even I would say that Smith in his prime is better than Jerry Rice and just about any other WR not named Andre Johnson. The stats really do not tell the whole story on Smith. I've seen moves and clutch plays from him that I've never seen any player do. He is the Barry Sanders of WRs.

Look, I understand Smitty is the best Panther of all time, and is without a doubt a top 10(arguably 5) receiver right now, but you can't compare ANY wide receiver, including Randy Moss in his prime or pretty much any receiver to Jerry Rice.

There has NEVER been a receiver as good as Rice. His route running, hands, football awareness, consistency, etc was just amazing. He always came through in the clutch, too.(not saying Smitty hasn't, just saying how well rounded Rice was.)
