Firstdayfan's Mock Draft

I've been wanting to post a mock on here for weeks but I've been going back and forth on so many scenerio's that it was tough for me to pick just one. But its the day of the draft so I'm out of time. I will be posting two mock's because I hate trying to forecast trades but I think that it would be shocking if Hurney didn't move us up or down with the first pick. So here we go.

Mock 1: Draft day Trade, in this scenerio the Panthers pull off something very similar to last year when they moved up to get Everette Brown, except they will have to also give up our 2nd round pick and next year's 2nd round pick for the Brown's 2nd round pick and their late third. Everyone follow?

Round 2 (38) Browns: Brian Price, DT, UCLA. Fox was at Price's Pro Day and if he falls I can't imagine the FO not making a move to jump up and grab him. Yes we have plenty of bodies at DT and yes Fox has said that DT was not a need but the value is just to good to pass up. We get a first round talent in the second round because of the deep class.

Round 3 (78): Taylor Price, WR, Ohio. I'm sorry but for my money Price is the guy we should go with. They worked out with him and he fits the mold of WR that Tolbert likes, think Lee Evans.

Round 3 (92) Browns: A.J. Edds, OLB, Iowa. A lot of people don't realize this but linebacker is almost as thin as WR except that the linebacker position is top heavy, an injury to any of the starters would be devastating. Edds could come in a push to start or be an excellent addition to special teams.

Round 4 (112): Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss. This would be a perfect spot for John Skelton but I am in the crowd that thinks we already have a QB of the future and we merely need a veteren pressence behind him. Hardy is a big boom or bust candidate but in the 4th round I'm willing to take that chance.

Round 6 (175): Crezdon Butler, CB, Clemson. Another Pro Day that Fox attended and a typical pick for the Panthers who love thinking ahead to the future, you know, when Richard Marshall won't be here.

Round 6 (202): Jeff Byers, C, USC: Whew, finally an offensive pick, you would think our defense was horrible last year or that we lost a ton of starters or something...oh wait. Byers brings some legitimate depth to the center position and he gets to learn from a fellow USC allumn. Could help at guard as well.

Round 6 (204): Kyle Williams, WR, Arizona St. By far my favorite player in this draft and a guy that I would love to see in a panthers jersey. Could fight for a return man job and could easily win the number 4 WR job with his speed, quickness, and hands. Could be the ideal slot reciever in a year or two.

Round 7 (223): Dairan Stewart, SS, South Carolina. I like the signings of special teams guys over the past few weeks but honestly I think they know that we need some guys who could eventually play if needed. Stewart needs time to develop but could be a good backup for years.

Round 7 (249): John Connor, FB, Kentucky. Anyone remember all those passes that Fiammetta dropped last year, yeah those, the ones that hit him right in the chest. Connor will probably not make the team but could at least push Fiammetta to work a little harder. Would be a good addition to the practice squad.

Here is my no trade mock (which again is almost for sure not gonna happen).

2nd Round (48): Kareem Jackson, CB, Oklahoma. A CORNER??? Yup, Fox and Hurney like value with the first pick and there isn't a WR or DE worth it right here so we bring in a guy to take Marshall's spot next year when he leaves. Jackson is an ideal cover 2 corner who can come up and tackle.

3rd Round (78): Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota. We would be lucky if he fell to this spot but because of injury concerns he might. A big target who runs great routes and has great hands. I hate comparing white receivers (it always seems like they remind them of another white receiver) but doesn't he remind you of Ricky Proehl.?

4th Round (112): Phillip Dillard, LB, Nebraska. Athletic linebacker who could fill in wherever we need him at the LB position...which is important because we need depth at all three.

6th Round (175): Shaun Lauvao, OL, Arizona St. I said the other day that I didn't think the OL needed help but this is a big physical guard who could play a few positions. Why not? Seems like we get injuries there every year.

6th Round (202): Brandon Deadrick, DT, Alabama. That's how much Fox is worried about the DT spot. A 6th round run stuffer who is big and strong and gets after it. I really feel like unless someone great falls to us in early rounds we won't address this position until late.

6th Round (204): Travis Goethal, LB, Arizona St. Yup the linebacker spot is that weak, Goeathal and Dilllard will give us some great depth and some solid special teamers. Oh and we should be really good in the 3rd quarters of the preseason games.

7th Round (223): Alex Daniels, DE, Ohio St. Kind of a project guy but who isn't in the 7th round. Could definitely fill in on passing downs but needs to get better moves. Again, I don't think the FO is as worried about the DE spot as some may think. Then again I could be wrong.

7th Round (249): David Gettis, WR, Baylor. Gettis is big and raw and may never become anything special but he has some tools that could definitely be molded into something good.

I don't think Edds is a 3rd round guy. 4th to 5th round is where I would put him.

Also if we trade up I think it will be for a DE or WR. I think we'll go for value if we stay put. If we're trading up we're going after a guy we want and not just for BPA.

I agree about trading up for a WR but not DE...I really just don't see the panthers admitting their mistake about Everette brown so openly. I don't see them using another high pick (especially their first one) on a DE.

And I do think Price could be a guy they like, fox was their at his pro day so at least there has been interest. Alualu is also a possibility.

I also agree about edds but I think teams will have him rated higher based on his ability to play SLB. Navaro bowman could also be an option there.

Yep, you're totally correct to call that pick a mistake before he's even had a chance to see full time reps.

I wasn't saying that Everette brown was a mistake I said picking him was a mistake. In other words trading this years 1st for him wasn't a good move. Especially if we feel the need to pick another guy for that position this year. You honestly think that hurney moves up AGAIN to take another DE? Come on...your smarter than that.

As much as I like Everette Brown, a part of me still REALLY would have liked to have #17. We could trade down to the 20s and still get Tate or Thomas or whoever we wanted and pick up another 2nd in the process.

I think you are missing my point, I like Everette Brown and I really hope he does well this year. He has talent as well as a good head on his shoulders. With that said when you look back at what we gave up for Otah (pretty much a 20 something pick) it turned out to be a great trade because Otah probably would have gone in the top 10-15 picks last year. When you look at the Brown trade we gave up the 17th overall pick for a guy who might have only been at best a 2nd round prospect this year. The value wasn't there and I think they know it.

Now, they are stuck in a position where they may have to draft another DE because Brown MIGHT not be that every down DE that they envisioned. I would love it if he turns out to be a dominant DE but the results aren't in yet and for a guy you thought was good enough for a number one spot thats just not an option.
