Spread Offense

...and you're back to what panthro stated, but you didn't get.

in the nfl, the third and fourth options are as good as tackle dummies for most nfl linebackers.

Relax, buddy. I'm just talking here. And yes, I got what Panthro said. Others are capable of understanding things as well.

You don't need a lot of talent in the 3rd and 4th receiver to get them open in a spread. It's all about routes, and what the other receivers are doing.

what linebackers are you folks talking about who line up against 3rd, 4th, or 5th receivers? even professional linebackers are not fast enough to run down the field with a professional receiver, much less hang with them when they make cuts. when teams use 4 or 5 receiver sets, defenses go to dime and quarter packages using backup corners or safeties, whichever is the better option for that team.

The point is the talent disparency that exists between Florida's/Oklahoma's #4WR vs Baylor/South Carolina's #4CB doesn't exist in the NFL like it does in College.

Because most teams don't draft for a spread. Teams in college recruit for a spread. They need their 3rd and 4th to be good. In the NFL, if you have more than one really good receiver, you don't go for another.

Ok let's spread 'em out. Steve Smith you go over there...um, and get open. Moose you head over there and see if you can break coverage on that wet blanket. Dwayne Jarret you stay here then got that way but you'll need to get past the Rasberry Jam at the line of scrimmage. Do we have a 4th WR? I said a 4th WR....Hankton go back to the bench. I said a 4th WR. Oh fug is that Kenny Moore? Damn, Oh well

Barn Burners on set. on set.

It's impossible for you to be that thickheaded.

Ok take Florida.

They can walk into kids houses across the nation and tell them they are going to Florida because they are florida. They can have this elite talent because they are Florida, and the talent is free.

For this to work in the NFL you would need WR's of the caliber Andre Johnson, Larry FitzGerald as your 2 starters, then AT LEAST a Breaston and Jerico Cotchery as 3 and 4 and that would be on the weak side. AND you have to pay these players, not just give them a fuging meal plan, a mixer with Chi Omega, and a scholarship.

Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon, Anthony Gonzalez...in addition to Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark...that's the situation I'm going for.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
