Offseason Recap 4: Leaving College Early - Pros and Cons

As a redshirt junior, I had the opportunity to remain at FSU to play my 5th year or leave early to try out for the NFL Draft. Obviously, I chose the latter but that decision was one of the biggest decisions of my life. Like everything in life, leaving college “early” had both pros and cons.

Pros:

The most obvious pro to leaving early was the financial security. As a professional, I had the opportunity to have financial security for myself, and the ability to assist my family. A significant pro that I most recently realized was the ability to develop as a Rookie without having the instant pressure to perform at the veteran level. I had the opportunity to grow and learn during my first year instead of simply modifying the techniques and skills I learned in college. Another pro is becoming a business or company. I no longer worked towards a degree (since I had achieved that) but football was now my career. The work ethic, the time, the commitment and the dedication all go towards building my business, Me. Lastly, getting drafted higher than if I waited. This is a pro and con but the reality is the NFL Draft is exactly that, a draft. It is unpredictable and nothing is guaranteed.

Cons:

A con is not getting drafted higher. This is a con simply based on speculation. There is always the possibility that if you wait you may increase your draft stock but as I said, all speculative. An additional con to leaving is not graduating from college. Although I have my degree, so many athletes miss out on this opportunity when they leave early. My advice is don’t leave without finishing what you started. Finally, the most important point here is in respect to the level of maturity. Leaving early is an adult decision camouflaged by bright lights, cameras and commentators. The reality is it is a major life adjustment leaving behind college life and becoming an adult. Some are ready and some are not but the reality is we all have to grow up and grow up fast.

Although there are both pros and cons, I don’t regret my decision. Everything happens for a reason, and I have learned and grown so much in the last year. That’s all for now but remember to check back for the final recap of the 5-Part Blog series.

Thank you all for leaving your comments. I appreciate your support and encouragement.

Signing off,

Everette

    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
    • Nah we just talking about giving a platform and normalizing predators (who both beat women) opinions and celebrating it if it fits your narrative.  If that's fun I'm fine being a miserable fug by not supporting P.O.S like that. N b4 you call me a libtard or some other dumb ish know I'm an Anarchist/Libertarian and believe both these dudes should get a complete ass whooping (at min) or something worse for what they have done to women in this world.
