On the radar: Rip Scherer

There’s a chance some of you have never even heard of Rip Scherer. If you haven’t, go ahead and put him on your radar.

He’s the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers and that could ultimately put him in a position to influence whether John Fox, who is in the last year of his contract, stays or goes.

With such young quarterbacks, Rip Scherer will have to do a lot of teaching in training camp.Scherer joined the Panthers last year after long-time quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy took a promotion with Denver. Scherer wasn’t able to solve the problems that started for quarterback Jake Delhomme at the end of the 2008 season, but I don’t think you can hang that on Scherer. Whatever Delhomme’s problem was, it was something within him. Delhomme’s gone now.

That means Scherer is starting with essentially a fresh slate. Matt Moore is the only quarterback with any experience and he’ll go to camp as the heavy favorite to open the season as the starter. The Panthers have high hopes for second-round draft pick Jimmy Clausen, but it probably would take a horrible preseason by Moore and a great one from Clausen for there to be a switch at the top of the depth chart. Rookie Tony Pike and Hunter Cantwell will be battling for the No. 3 job.

That’s a lot of youth and that means Scherer will have to do a lot of teaching. After a lengthy run as a college assistant, Scherer worked as head coach at James Madison and Memphis and first worked in the NFL in 2005 when he joined the Cleveland Browns, where he learned the same system coordinator Jeff Davidson now runs in Carolina.

There is no doubt Moore and Clausen have some talent, but it’s going to be up to Scherer to get them “coached up’’ quickly. With a very strong running game, a good offensive line and wide receiver Steve Smith, steady, mistake-free play could make a quarterback a big success in this system. Scherer’s job is to have Moore and/or Clausen ready.

Sooo...the QB coach is supposed to...coach the QB's? That's basically what he's getting at?

in the 1st paragraph, it says he could influence whether Fox stays or goes. basically saying he would be a candidate for the head coaching job if Fox does leave.

Wow I think your reaching there. I believe he just meant that whether he excels at his job or sucks (the qb's are great or suck) will have a great bearing on whether Fox keeps his job. For example, if the QB's suck, we suck, the season sucks, John Fox gets fired...suck

Scherer would be maybe the fourth or fifth guy at best on the list of our current coaches as candidates for the head job. In other words, not in a million years.

I really like Meeks I wonder how he feels about being a head coach and how the colts felt as well. I know that other guy was guaranteed the job for a long time but I'd be a little curious.

If we were to promote from inside the organization I think Meeks would be the popular choice. I also wouldn't be upset with Davidson.

Yes it is a slow offseason, but he has a legitimate reason to write this article. Rip Scherer will have a spotlight on him, even if it's among coaches, on how well he teaches these new guys how to play. Like mentioned, it's now a clean slate.. let's see if he's really good at his job.. not just that he has a job and what he technically does at that job.

    • Clark played 2 seasons in college and had a grand total of 1,340 yards with 6 TDs. T-Mac had 1,402 and 10 as a Sophomore and 1,319 and 8 as a Junior in one less game since they didn't make a bowl (not to mention his 702 and 8 as a Freshman). Chark's only 1,000 yard NFL season (which was only 1,008 yards to begin with, and only 3 games over 79 yards that year) came in an offense where the only other non RB's in the offense to have more than 35 targets were Chris Conely (90 targets for 775 yards) and Dede Westbrook (101 targets for 660 yards).  His 2nd best season, his competition for targets was Keelan Cole Sr (88 targets for 642 yards), Laviska (79 targets for 600) and Conley again (63 targets for 471). Beyond his 1k season, he had seasons of 706, 525, 502, 174, 154, and 31 yards, despite being the #1 WR on his team for 3 of his 4 seasons that he had over 174 yards. Any 1st round WR should already be considered a better WR than that, let alone one taken in the Top 10 and has the college statistics that T-Mac had.  Had we traded back and taken Egbuka or Golden, I'd still be saying the same thing about them vs Chark, this has nothing to do with my personal love of T-Mac.
    • I'm not sure his idea of us being 28th at the start of the season isn't wrong. It's hard to project who we are based off the fact all the rookies we are depending on to contribute but know nothing about. we don't know what derrick brown looks like week 1.. hunter renfrow t-mac,legette, and our tight ends. we are going to have two new starting safeties no matter what. I think it's hard to know just which way the dial can swing on this roster.
    • That's certainly what we hope but c'mon... stating it as fact when he's never played a down of NFL football?
