Mavericks may take Tyson Chandler off the Bobcats hands

Recommended Posts

Sources say that the Mavericks have identified Minnesota's Al Jefferson and Charlotte's Tyson Chandler as potential trade options, but those are secondary targets given Nowitzki's need for someone on the wings who can consistently occupy defenses, create his own offense and open things up for him.

Note: If this goes through the only players contracts on the Mavericks roster that are close to Chandlers are Eric Dampier, Jason Terry, and Caron Butler. Honestly I think Jason Terry would be the most viable option. Terry used to play point guard and still can play point guard. I could get used to this line up.

PG-Jason Terry

SG- Stephen Jackson

SF- Gerald Wallace

PF- Tyrus Thomas

C- Nazr Mohammed

That looks like a damn good starting five.

Honestly the only guy I am interested in Terry.

If we could pick up Terry and Amundson that would be solid. Chandler for Terry then sign Amundson. We would still have three spots left and I think those spots should belong to three summer league players in Sherron Collins, Darius Miles, and Jerel McNeal. I think this roster is stout top to bottom.

Center

1. Nazr Mohammed

2. Louis Amundson

3. DeSagana Diop

4. Alexis Ajinca

Power Forward

1. Tyrus Thomas

2. Boris Diaw

Small Forward

1. Gerald Wallace

2. Derrick Brown

3. Darius Miles

Shooting Guard

1. Stephen Jackson

2. Gerald Henderson

3. Jerel McNeal

Point Guard

1. Jason Terry

2. D.J. Augustin

3. Sherron Collins

please take him it would allow us to sign haywood for about 4 or 5 mil. a year less

No it wouldn't. If we're able to sign Thomas for the $6MM qualifying offer, which I highly doubt we'll be able to, then trade Chandler we'd be left with $4MM under the cap. That money would be taken by whoever we get back in a trade. Haywood wouldn't settle for MLE money anyways, he's worth somewhere in the $8MM range.

Dampier's contract could be very valuable. 13 mil expiring if I'm not mistaken. I would take Terry as well but the FO may be looking to shed payroll.

There's no reason to swap Chandler and Dampier. They're both centers, both have contracts that expire after the year, and Dampier's contract would actually push us closer to the luxury tax than we are right now. Jason Terry is the only person on that roster that fits our needs and would work out financially.

if they want tyson, we better unload one of our contracts, hopefully diop. That dude is crippling us like Eddie Curry's contract in New York.

We're not going to be able to unload Diop until the last year of his contract, and only because he'll have some value as an expiring contract then.

dampier's contract is not guaranteed for next season. meaning the cats could trade tyson for dampier and then waive dampier freeing up $13m in cap room.

i don't see the cats being able to attract any big name free agents here so i would rather trade tyson for jason terry.

Its actually not $13MM in cap room, but $13MM in payroll space. We'd have around $5MM under the cap in that situation. And Dampier having a non-guaranteed contract is just another reason why he'll never be swapped for Chandler. Why trade for Chandler when you can just tell Dampier to hit the road and re-sign Haywood?

    • Honestly, 2020 and 2021 were the years we sat on our asses like idiots. First being 2020.  Love may have been the one we missed out on with a trade down or a trade up from our 2nd pick.  And Hurts was a totally viable 2nd rounder to take a flier on after going DB. Love in particular was one of those top guys pre-college season, but he had a lot of TOs his last year and some iffy decision making pegged him back by scouts. If we hired a staff with a decent plan and vision (instead of Rhule and whatever he wanted to do) willing to groom him behind a vet, that may have been the money bet.  2021, it was Fields.  We could've tried him on for size, even if it didn't work, it would have put us in position to draft a QB in 2024. It all sucks.  We chased.
