Checkers Hockey

The upper bowl of TWCA is usually curtained off, and the curtains are opened when necessary.

The arena is made exclusively for basketball, so for hockey they only have room for "horseshoe" style seating. The only real seating that is taken out in this arrangement is the media tables on the one end of the arena.

It's not as cozy as RBC, but, for being a basketball arena it is a pretty nice place to watch a game.

Man I miss having a minor league team in Greensboro. :(

I was a little too young to remember the Monarchs in the early nineties but I do remember the Generals. What a great rivalry that was. I miss all the regional rivalries the Checkers had in the ECHL before it merged with the WCHL and expanded nationally. Greensboro, South Carolina, Pee Dee/ Florence, Greenville, Richmond...those were the days.

That being said I'll take being the AHL Canes affiliate in Charlotte over the ECHL Rangers affiliate any day of the week.

Man the late 80s, early 90s Monarchs were the rock stars of the ECHL...was an amazing time period. When they went to the AHL in the late 90s it was all but over. Should've stayed ECHL.

And once the Canes rented the city and left, pro hockey in Greensboro died. Every year it seems there's a rumor of Greensboro as a possible place for expansion in some minor league but sadly nothing really comes to fruition.

We had an ECHL team here for a little over 10 years (Augusta Lynx), then they folded up. We have been without hockey for a couple of years now, but this year, we are starting up an SPHL team.

I hated to see all the teams in the ECHL previously mentioned gone. There were some really good rivalries between us and those teams. I would say Greenville was our most disliked rival.

I am glad to see the Checkers become an AHL team. The quality of play should be much better than the ECHL. I hope to make one or two of their games. I really like the TWC Arena having been there for a game for our old team.

Greensboro vs. Roanoke man...that was an awesome rivalry. I miss the days of coming home, heading to the Greensboro Coliseum paying my $15 for a ticket and then enjoying a good game. Last game I went to Matt Elich hit a game winner in OT to beat the Roanoke Express. :)

On the way out of the coliseum a huge Panthers chant started up as the next night we were set to play the Cowboys in the playoffs.
