Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Still more, and something I can't believe I missed.

When Harbaugh went to the Chargers in 1999, the GM who signed him was Marty Hurney's mentor, Bobby Beathard.

Beathard and the Chargers parted ways in 2001. The Chargers also parted ways with Harbaugh that year. His next stop? The Panthers. Hurney was the salary cap manager at the time.

It's no stretch to think that Beathard might have called Hurney to suggest the Panthers should pick up Harbaugh. That, or perhaps the Panthers started looking at Harbaugh on their own and, knowing the connection, Hurney could have called Beathard to ask his opinion.

The OC for San Diego during Harbaugh's two year stint? Current Panthers TE Coach Geep Chryst.

I've been saying for the past few days that the Beathard connection might help Russ Grimm get the Panthers job. Clear now that Harbaugh likely has the Beathard going for him too.

I now strongly believe the coaching choice will come down to these two (should they not take better offers elsewhere, of course).

Assuming they both get a shot, the winner would likely be whoever interviews better.

No way Fox returns.

JR isn't going to say so to Mr/Mrs Fan Smith.

NO WAY

Agreed. Plus I think there's too much water under the bridge.

Worth remembering that Richardson doesn't actually have to fire Fox. This year is the last year of his contract. After this season ends, he's not the coach anymore.

In order for him to return, Richardson would have to offer him a new contract, and it'd have to be a lucrative enough deal that Fox would accept and sign it rather than looking around for what he could get elsewhere.

It's just tough to see all that happening.

Stranger things have happened. He was pretty candid on his thoughts on the new CBA/Lockout and justification on ticket price increases.

I personally don't think he returns but I also won't write it off as possible. Who would have thought that he'd fire his sons?

Thats pretty damn interesting.

I didn't follow the Panthers that closely back then.

What was his relationship with the team when he left ?

How's this for a scenario?

- The Panthers hire Jim Harbaugh as head coach.

- The Chargers fire Norv Turner and allow his staff to walk.

- Harbaugh gets on the phone with a guy who was his teammate in Chicago from 1987 up until said teammate retired in 1992.

- He asks his old teammate "How would you like to be my defensive coordinator?"

Guess who?

Good find.

Believe it or not, I had a tough time finding a pic of Rivera in his Bears uniform. Finding a pic of Harbaugh in his Bears uniform was pretty easy.

If you can find a Bears pic between 87 and 92 that shows both of them, that'd really be something

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
