My cousin's wife runs the animal shelter here. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff the dogs they rescue go through/came from. That's why my she and my cousin have like 6 dogs.

If I didn't have extenuating circumstances that pretty much dictate I get a puppy or a well trained young adult I'd be more open to a rescue.

Rehabilitating an animal's psyche is not something just anyone could do, and I'm not sure I have the energy for that.

I rescued both of mine under the age of 4 months and they were great. Not saying this is the case for all but you can find them. I think they are thankful for being rescued as well and they are more loving because of it. I get compliments everywhere I take them about how well they behave and how happy and loving they are towards other dogs and people.

I'd kill someone if something ever happened to them. That is not an exaggeration. Dogs are special creatures and the bond they form with you is unbelievable.

Make it happen.

Or they could end up on a chain in the corner of the yard straining to attack anything that gets within 20 feet.

I'd never chain up an animal, and I want an indoors dog.

Under 4 months is definitely still young enough. Most rescues seem to be 9 months or older.

Yeah I think you can tell at the shelter which dogs have issues and which don't. Most shelters won't sell aggressive dogs either. My dogs are indoors most of the time, usually posted on MY couch but when they are outdoors in the yard or at a park or something they light up.

The only issues I've had is with the lighter or the brindles. He was found wandering the streets of Mexico, really skinny, starving, and really sick. When we brought him home it took some getting used to with another dog already in the house but they eventually became inseparable, even when I take one to the vet the other has to go just to be around. The only issue came when food/bones were down. The new puppy didn't realize there was enough to go around (from his days starving) and would often growl but he has grown out of it and I or anyone else can reach right in and take anything I want out of his mouth with no problems. It just takes a little time.

I'm not so much telling you to get a rescue because only you know what's best for you and what you can handle but just people in general. If you have the time/space/money, rescuing an animal is an awesome way to spend it.
