Wide receiver prospects

Wide receiver is not a big need considering we just had two rookies that had pretty good years. Sure they didn't put up big numbers but you have to consider that we are a run first team and we had horrible quarterback play. Now that Luck isn't coming we probably won't get a Qb with that #1 pick.We might not even draft a WR but with the unknown potential of Armanti Edwards and the decline of Steve Smith drafting a wide receiver looks like a big need to me considering we have a horrible offense. I think we need to draft a big play making receiver because La Fell is a possession WR and Gettis is my favorite of the rookies he isn't fast enough to be a big play maker.

According to Yahoo this is what the Top Ten list looks like, I took most of what yahoo wrote but here is the link if you want it

Yahoo top WR list of 2011 draft

) A.J. Green, WR, Georgia -A.J. Green is the top wide receiver in this class for one reason. He is a true wide receiver. He's tall, fast, smart, has great hands, and is not afraid to get hit.

2) Julio Jones, WR, Alabama - Julio would be number one on this list if it wasn't for one thing. He drops the ball too much.

3) Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh - Baldwin is like Andre Johnson. Not the fastest wide receiver that ever played the game of football but he catches the ball around 5-8 times a game and at the end of the 2009-2010 season he compiled 1,111 yards.

4) Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame - All I'm going to say is good luck to Michael. He lost his quarterback, his Coach, and his wide receiver on the opposite side. He is going to have a very rough year. If Michael Floyd can get through this year with very good numbers then he deserves to to number one overall. All joking aside i think Floyd should go late in round one and he should be a very good wide receiver in the NFL.

5) DeVier Posey, WR, Ohio State - DeVier Posey should do well this season. He has Pryor as a QB throwing to him and he has a easy schedule this season. He is relatively fast and has a big

body but that still does not slow him down.

6) Ryan Broyles, WR/PR, Oklahoma - Broyles is a very good punt returner. He averaged just below 16 yards per return. He is also a very good wide receiver. Broyles has gone trough some significant changes over the past two seasons and it look like he can do anything. Look for a team to make a move on him early in round two.

7) Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State - Boise State is the best team in college football. They can run with any other big name team and can probably play better then most of them. If the Blue Grass Gladiators go undefeated this season again and Pettis puts up the same numbers of last season. (catching 63 passes for 855 yards and 14 touchdowns) then he should get drafted some time late in round two and may fall to round three.

8) Terrance Toliver, WR, LSU - What happened to LSU. They were a power-house team like four years ago and now they are fighting just to make a bowl birth. As a Junior Toliver did a good job getting 735 yards but only three touchdowns. If LSU starts fighting like everyone knows they can, then Terrance Toliver should be going late in round three in the 2011 NFL Draft.

9) Vincent Brown, WR, San Diego State - If it was not for injuries Brown would be around number five on this list. Brown has been a very good wide receiver for the last two years and now if he declares for the NFL draft in 2011 he should be a good slot receiver for some team that is weak at wide receiver. Look for him to go in round five.

10) DeAndre Brown, WR, Southern Miss - In the last two seasons Brown has had just under 2,000 receiving yards, and that is with a broken foot two years ago.

Players that did not make the top 10

Chris Owusu, WR, Stanford

Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, WR/KR, Iowa

Greg Little, WR, North Carolina

Cecil Shorts III, WR, Mount Union

I would like to add Leonard Hankerson, and Justin Blackmon who didn't make the list. This list was made before the season began but is still pretty accurate. We must realize that we have no 2nd round pick and unless we trade down I don't see us drafting a WR with the #1 pick which would mean unless there is a trade our first chance to get a decent WR will be the first pick in the third round. I would like to see you make your own list of players YOU would like us to get.

Justin Blackmon- He is fast and would be a nice pick up in the draft, I don't know if he will get pass the third round but his speed would be nice to have on our team. Dez Bryant has done well in the NFL which Blackmon replaced this year. So I feel this guy should have no problem being an elite NFL receiver.

Ryan Broyles- He could help us on returns as well as be that big play making WR we lack. I would love to have this kid but we would at least need a second round pick to have this kid. Very unlikely we can get him in the third round.

Titus Young- He was a monster at Boise State, He made some big plays and should be able to be drafted in the mid to late rounds.

Michael Floyd- Maybe Clausen needs a player he is more familar with. He has been solid but he isn't the speedy reciever Im looking for. He is good enough to be a consideration though.

A.J. Green- he has been named the top WR in the draft but I just don't have a good feeling about this guy.

Greg Little-This guy used to be a running back which means he should be a very physical receiver. With all the Drama he had this year and only playing one year at WR we should be able to get this guy in the 5-6th round. With all the success UNC wide outs are having in the NFL I would love to take a risk on this guy with a late pick.

Leonard Hankerson- People say this guy is could be the best Miami WR that ever played. If thats true then we should get this guy considering the talent that has came from Miami. Micheal Irvin and Andre Johnson went to Miami and if people are saying this guy is the best WR to come from Miami then he must be special.

Julio Jones- This guy drops too many balls for me to want him

I'm kind of on the wall with drafting Green #1. But with Richardson's recent comments saying we have to keep up with the rest of the league in terms of offense/passing, Green can vary likely be the pick. He has #1 playmaking potential. As far as the other receivers here are my thoughts.

Justin Blackmon- Definately a monster. I think he will become a great receiver. He is going to end up going in the 1st round. No way he makes it into the 3rd.

Ryan Broyles- Staying in school.

Titus Young- Definately an underrated receiver. Good call.

Michael Floyd- So far has said he is staying in school. Might change his mind with the big bowl game and Rudolph declaring. Will have to trade up to get him.

A.J. Green- #1 offensive prospect. Could very well make an impact right away. Could move Smitty into the slot and become our future #1. Needs to pack on some weight. I dont see him taking the 3 year transition.

Greg Little- A little raw but could very well be this years Mike Williams. Could be a steal in the mid-late round. Very physical.

Leonard Hankerson- Good receiver. But i would not put him in the same breathe as Johnson. Put up slightly better numbers than Johnson but Miami passed the ball alot more this year then in past years. Not to mention Johnson is a rare specimen in terms of physique, catching ability, etc. With that being said, he is still a solid WR. Has gotten better with routes. Sometimes has the dropsies but really improved in that area.

Julio Jones- Wouldn't touch him until the 2nd. I don't care if he looks like he's built like a train. Gets sloppy with routes and drops too many balls.

In the end, do we really want to spend more draft picks on WRs and wait for them to develop. I say we either draft Green or sign a FA WR. Let our current receiving core develop. They already have a year head start.

As bad as we need a DT I can see us drafting Green #1, if we do draft him then hopefully we will get Little in the late rounds, with the recent talent at WR that UNC has produced in the past I think a late round pick would be worth it. I would rather trade down and get Blackmon and a DT but I don't make decisions for the Panthers so Green #1 is more than likely to be our pick.

I found a nice AJ green Video, I honestly didn't know that he blocked a fg which it shows in the video and there is a clip where he makes a nice block in the run game which is what we need. Although I think Blackmon is a better WR, Green seems more like a complete player. He reminds me of Sydney Rice when he played in South Carolina.

    • Those were the days lol
    • Have you even been reading my posts?  I'm not so sure because you seem to insinuate that I'm expecting some monster year 1 season, but I've time and time again said I'm only expecting 800 yards from him as a rookie.  Because like you said, it's not in his control, we have a bunch of good receiving options and two 1k yard RBs in what should be a run first offense. And yes, I'm very much a T-Mac homer, I've never once denied it, I'm an Arizona alumni who has been open about that from the very first thread I made about him over 18 months ago. But that doesn't mean I'm blindly expecting him to be an All Pro as a rookie, I just know more about his game than most people here who watch his highlights and breakdowns.  Which generally focus on the things he does best and worst to highlight his best abilities (his downfield contested catches) and where he needs to improve (separation) as those are the two things fans care most about when talking about the draft. What those breakdowns don't cover much are the "boring and mundane" things he does very well and exactly what you are talking about needing for Bryce.   He was constantly used in the short passing game, whether they be WR screens or quick slants, to get the ball in his hands and let him make plays, it's why he was 5th in the Big 12 in YAC last year.  With his size and hands, when he runs a quick 5 yard slant in front of the defender and the QB delivers the ball on time with anticipation, creating buckets of separation isn't needed, he's going to make the catch and then get some YAC for a 1st down.  Go watch the 30 minute YT videos that string together every catch he made last year (or the same thing from 2023) and you'll see those plays constantly, but in the analyst breakdowns leading into the draft those things don't get discussed as much as the big plays and then the things he needs to work on, because they're just not as "sexy" to talk about as those. Per your ask... He has 3 main things he needs to improve upon, and again, "needing to improve" doesn't mean "he's terrible" at them, just things he can get better at, like all young players have things to work on. 1.  His get off at the snap.   For all the amazing things he did for us at Arizona, this was always the thing that would frustrate me the most, as he generally was a bit slow to fire off the line.  The nice thing is even in the minimal clips we've seen from rookie mini camp, his initial fire off the line already appears to have been sped up a lot, he clearly has been working on that in the lead up to the draft. 2.  His separation Yea, he's not a 6' quick twitch athlete, so his separation is never going to be at the level of a Chase or Jefferson.  I've always admitted that, but because he's not one of those guys, he also brings a lot of things that those others can't.  His catch radius and hands are why I'm not as concerned about his separation, because he's so good at making those contested catches by snatching the ball away from his body to where the defender can't get to it to break it up. But yes, he does still need to get better here, just as all rookies have things to improve upon. 3.  Using his body more physically This is something that he did at times, but he also is just a great athlete for his size and would often rely on his physical abilities to make defenders miss him in the open field than just power through them, which is fine in college.  But yes, at the next level, as he gets older and stronger, I'd like to see him use it more like Evans does, and that will come with time as he builds strength and develops that part of his game. Again, I implore you to to spend an hour watching those "Every catch from the X season" for his last two years in college.  If/when you do, I think you're going to be very surprised by the number of times we used him in the short passing game and let him gain YAC to move the ball down the field.
