A Season in Review: OLine Myth

duh. if you have an oline that cant block, of course other teams are going to blitz more and overload the line. The offensive line should be blamed for 90% of the sacks, not just 50%.

actually.. it's just as likely that if your coaching staff doesn't adjust to the blitzes and stacking of the box, that you're oline will suffer..

I fully believe this was the case.. as evidence in the '09 game against the Eagles when our Oline wasn't as bad..

You want to replace Wharton and Schwartz? Wharton is one of our best linemen, and when Schwartz moved to guard the running game immediately improved. You're talking about two guys who can play both tackle and guard, and be effective.

How about waiting and seeing how a line of Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Schwartz, and Otah looks? I suspect it will be at least as good as 2008, if not better.

You're seeing what you want to see.

that would require not being as over-dramatic..

You are completely over looking the fact that Clausen and Moore performed pretty much exactly the same in this regard. Both need the experience and ability to pick up blitzes pre-snap and adjust accordingly.

It might surprise you but this is the sort of things rookies can't do across the board, which is why blitzing them is always so successful. Clausen WILL improve in this area, so you are essentially trashing him on this subject simply because he is a rookie.

Bravo for that.

moore performed badly behind the oline at its worst. pickles came in and as the oline and the running game improved, he showed no improvement.

and wow! without even thinking i can name several rookie qbs that came in the past few years and didn't look like absolute poo.

and pickles will improve? really? a polished turd is still a turd.

people can believe what they want, as that will be the case regardless, but if you aren't factoring the horrible coaching that occurred this season and how bad Rip Scherer was both here and Cleveland, then you are ignoring very important facts...

that's not to say Clausen will ever be good, but it is to say you can't make a final judgment under those circumstances with a ROOKIE qb...

and if that's how you roll, then you're just one of many over-dramatic fans who fail to understand football..

yeah, the coaching was horrible. but who's to say it wasn't bad because the coaching staff didn't have confidence in the player(s) trying to execute their plays?

i've watched a LOT of football in my life and maybe it is simply the confluence of a rookie qb, poor oline play, and bad coaching, but i've never EVER seen such a pathetic excuse for an NFL qb. he might be coachable to where he's a somewhat capable backup but i doubt he has either the physical or mental tools to ever deserve a starting job in this league.

Yes the play-calling had to be extremely dumbed down for Clausen. Granted we had a conservative style already.

Trying to impose a Brady playbook on Clausen would have been even more disastrous.

the coaching was far from fine.. and the playcalling was beyond horrible..

there is no justification for the playcalling and having a rookie QB..

there is nothing to base this year on for this rookie QB..

and talking about imposing a brady style playbook has nothing to do with this discussion.. dumbing down the playbook isn't entirely true.. we did nothing to the effect of high percentage throws and quicker passes, especially when the defense was pinning their ears back constantly..

<sigh>

Look, it would be nice if once in a while the threads in the huddle did not descend into pointless bash fests of Clausen. Everyone has had their go at him, so there is no need to bring it in here.

There are so many things that can be brought up in argument to your statements, but its really not worth it because you have already stated you don't even want to entertain potential in the kid.

So from here on, unless you are going to drop the Clausen poo talk I think I am just going to ignore you.

What was the O-line when Moore went 28/41 308 2TDs in week 7?

Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Schwartz, Williams

They gave up 3 hits and 4 pressures and the running game managed 2.5 yards per carry for the running backs.

How many blocks did goodson completely fail at?

3 sacks, 1 hit and 2 pressures in 65 snaps pass blocking, which was a better ratio than Stew. He had the same but in less snaps pass blocking.

I think the issue wasn't expanding the playbook to a Brady level, rather calling plays that are designed to get people open cheaply. Fox's whole philosophy is built on being exceptionally efficient at the plays called and due to this you need a smaller sample of plays.

With a rookie QB (with an equally inexperienced starter in Moore), two rookie wide outs and 3 first time starters on the OLine execution was always going to be an issue. Believe what you want about his talent, but that shear lack of experience is going to take a toll. Fox and co knew this, yet offered not fluctuation from their scheme and philosophy to help these plaeyrs out.

    • I mean, you probably should've waited after the season is over before "going there," that way we we'd have four more games of comparison and discussion. Don't get me wrong, I occasionally go out on a limb, but Bryce just had his best game and has given people hope (which could realistically be false hope), and Shedeur just doesn't have that many games under his belt (even if he does look promising), one of them being against the Titans. No harm in being patient and letting things play out.  If you noticed, Tepper seems to be taking a wait-and-see attitude, and he didn't mention Bryce in the clip in the other thread. I'm still highly skeptical of Bryce (and glad that Sanders has shown an ounce of success), but the reality is that we have to let things play out. The Sanders train left long ago (if it was even here). But,there are more realistic options if Bryce turns back into a frog.
    • imagine thinking that talking about our next opponent is "gassing up" someone.... and then lying about basic info because it's not flattering to the league's worst starting QB since he arrived.  as a starter he is 2-3 (just a fact) as a starter vs Bryce this year pass yards per game - Shough rush yards per game - Shough comp % - Shough  QB rating - Shough yards/per attempt - Shough and Shough is only good for a 2nd year rookie thrust into the gig on a bad team.   He is getting graded on a curve of what he is.  And he won the last head to head vs us, and looked like the best QB on the field that day.   there are a billion red flags when it comes to Bryce Young.  This is just another.
    • Imagine gassing up a 2-4 QB for a terrible division rival with stats worse than our QB in every category except raw yards per game
