Gantt is going on about suspicion that Washington was maybe a little cramped by his situation in Chicago and wanted more autonomy under Rivera. mayhaps Marinelli was taking matters into his own hands a little bit.

probably since so much was invested into that line and that was what Marinelli coached the season before.

Probably true. I'd forgotten Johnson stuck around in Chicago longer than Rivera did.
