Canes @ Sabres

With 4 points separating us, Buffalo, and the Rangers, this is a crucial win tonight. The Rangers face the Islanders tonight and if somehow they could lose, and we win our game tonight in Buffalo we could be in a good position to get back in the real thick of it all and get ourselves a seed. Go Canes, and for tonight, Go Islanders!

I'm content with that first period. Not overly excited, but it was a pretty good one. Our PP problems, at least in the first 2 we had so far, is that we don't seem to HAVE any plays. Its just free-wheeling, which is fine even strength. But with a man-advantage, you have to have some passing plays that are designed to get guys open. On the one where Buffalo blocked like, 3 straight shots because we had NO separation, that was because we're just free-wheeling. 3 or 4 designed passes and shoot. Get guys open!

Sutter's goal was exactly what we needed morale-wise. We have been getting to the net most of the night. For something to finally come from it is huge. Miller is hot tonight, so we have to keep getting shots on him.

22 shots on Cam in 1 period...not good. 3 of those shots came on bad line changes. That is coaching. Mo needs to know better. I'd rather us turn it over on a dump into the offensive zone than let them skate it in easily on a line change from the neutral zone. The rest is a combination of our backside defenders just STANDING there and Buffalo being really aggressive in the zone.

We need to ratchet it down a bit defensively and keep being aggressive offensively. Staal, Skinner, and Sutter are all looking like gold right now. Ruutu is hustling his ass off as well.

Good win. A lesser goalie and we end up with 3 goals I think. Miller was on tonight, we just kept plugging away. Ward stood on his head a couple times and made some good saves (and a lot of saves). We need to do exactly what we did tonight...except being shitty on the PP. God we are awful.

    • I agree.  I don’t think I have ever been accused of being a Howell fan. No more than fan of some other random QB.   But I watched and I saw. He has some talent. Maybe I didn’t watch close enough to see his weaknesses.
    • He is a pit bull when it comes to that.  And after he missed out last year on Williams, it seems he is trying a different approach, looks like. Don’t hold back. No half measures, because someone will come and full measure your ass. Close the deal. He left a little opening for The Patriots last year.  He closed so far this year. Of what we know about.
    • They have been doing the mercenary one year RB now for a little while. Foreman..  It works pretty well. You can find ball carriers. The passing game trips a lot of those guys up. Pass blocking, route running, they have a lot to know.    Rico wasn’t a great pass blocker but he got in the way most of the time. He is a really good pass catcher.     He’s tough. Needs to find out why he was cramping late in the games. If he can fix that maybe can step up even more. Wish him luck. I think he’ll do well.    If Brooks can be something, what a bonus that would be at this point.  I really believe they went for him because of his extra layer with being a good receiver. And we need more of that with what we are working with trying to move the ball.
