10 Defensive Linemen the Carolina Panthers Need to Target

Recommended Posts

Shut the hell up, I know it's Bleacher Report. But I wrote it so it must be good.

READ IT HERE

I've found that Kenrick Ellis is just as talented as any other defensive tackle prospect in the draft, save Fairley and Dareus. We should seriously target him and Martin Parker with picks 97 and 98. With those two, we could seriously be set for years.

Adam Schefter reported on ESPN's Sports Center Wednesday that Auburn DT Nick Fairley missed his flight to the Combine, missed a team meeting there, and was late for a team interview at his Pro Day.

Now the "red flag" picture is coming into sharper focus. Fairley was forced to go the junior college route entering college, had just one dominant season at Auburn, and has faced criticism for taking plays off. While he possesses the talent to go No. 1 overall, Fairley's commitment issues leave him as one of the biggest wildcards in the top half of the draft.

If we trade down I hope we avoid him like the plague.

I am really interested with the concept of drafting a WR or CB #1 overall in the draft. Now whether or not that happens, I have my extreme doubts, but being able to find players in free agency is something the Panthers never really do. Don't get me wrong, though, they find the occasional gem or get a good starter out of it. But this thing they've been doing recently where free agency is a band-aid instead of a remedy? Hurting the team.

I think Rivera will change that state of mind. I hope he goes after Cofield and we trade down. It is best for our future as long as we draft smartly. Smartly meaning Dareus, Peterson, or Green.

Personally, being the homer that I am; If we trade down these are the guys I like on the defensive side.

1. Robert Quinn, DE, UNC: Quinn is by far (now that Bowers is down) the best defensive end in the class with an amazing skill set, premium speed, and great athleticism. He would definitley make other offensive lineman take notice due to his quick rips and spins. With a defensive end combination of Quinn, Brown, and Brayton on one side with Johnson, Hardy, Taylor, and Norwood on the other; the Panthers defensive ends would command the respect that Peppers and Rucker did back in the days.

2. Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn: I am an Auburn fan as well and though Fairley scares me based on his drive, motive, and irresponsibility I would without a shadow of a doubt take him if we traded down. Dareus may have the better athleticism but Fairley has the better skill set and if you want to argue that check the stat books. If I am not mistaking, Fairely had 12 sacks this year to Dareus' 4.

3. Marvin Austin, DT, UNC: Marvin Austin is my pick for the Panthers in the third round if he is still availabe and if the Panthers pick Newton over Dareus or Fairley. I like Austin's size and his motor. He has decent quickness and is a great player when it comes to stuffing the run. Him and Landri or whoever inside would cause some havock to opposing running back's.

I think we would be extremely fortunate if Marvin would fall to the third round
