Breaking Down "The List"

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

My title seems ironic now.

The Panthers didn't "break down" his list. They crushed it; crumpled it into a little ball, spit on it, shot it basketball style into the nearest trash can and followed up with a cheer of "whoooo, two points" :sosp:

Peppers and Carl Carey sought to put the onus on the team, either dissuading them from franchising him or forcing the team to do the heavy lifting for them by negotiating with a team that Peppers considered acceptable.

Hurney's response: "You want a deal somewhere else? Go find it yourself. Oh, and keep in mind that whoever makes you an offer has to believe it's worth parting with two first round picks to get you."

Ouch!

Hardball's fun, ain't it? :sosp:

Hurney didn't seem to care too much for peppers demands and certainly crushed them up and threw them away. I wouldn't have minded hearing peppers and Carey's convo after the Hurney Interview though. Probably would have had at least a laugh or two.

Oh yes Hurney playing hardball back is fun.

Jets, New England, Miami or Baltimore.

Pep wants to win a superbowl and he'd like to play in the NFC. Atlanta and Tampa made strides, tampa is in florida (no income tax) and atlanta is pretty familiar to him.

The AFC team is harder to pick, Miami has no income tax either and is a 34 team.

Jets, Pats and Baltimore all run the 34 and all need some OLB/DE tweener type player help and Pep could help the Pats return to and win a superbowl with brady under centre, he could help the jets get into the Playoffs and he could also help baltimore replace suggs.

Hardball's fun until it comes back and hits you in the soft ones

What's the worst that can happen in this scenario? Pep sits out the whole year and they have to eat the 17 million against the cap though he doesn't play? I don't think that is likely at all though I have said in another thread that he is one of the few players whose rookie deal was so long that he won't have to worry about losing a year of accrued FA if he does sit the whole year. Still, I don't see him sitting out the year. It's almost a career killer dollar wise. Worst case I see happening is there's no trade, his agent and the Cats agree not to tag him the following year, he signs it, and plays his butt off and gets another huge payday elsewhere in 2010. I would expect him not to show up at all for offseason, TC etc. though.

And hell yeah I don't think the Cats need to go to the teams Pep wants to play for to open negotiations. Let them do that. I think he will get traded though, just not for 2 #1s.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
